In-form Salgaocar hammer struggling Vasco in GPL
The Green Brigade registered their seventh consecutive win in the league
Vasco Sports Club suffered a thrashing 5-0 defeat at the hands of Salgaocar FC in their last match of the Goa Professional League, played at Duler Stadium earlier today.
Today’s three points brought Salgaocar one place up to the 5th place with 32 points from 17 matches, while Vasco concluded their season with 20 points from 22 matches.
Vasco coach Eban Mesquita made no changes to his side which lost to Sporting Clube de Goa in the last match, whereas Salgaocar coach Norbert Gonsalves also chose to go with the same XI which defeated Corps of Signals in the last match.
Though Salgaocar were the dominant side in the first 20 minutes, they could not capitalise on their chances as Mackroy Peixote and Umesh Harijan’s aimless shots from outside the box and superb defending from Vasco’s last line restricted the Green Brigade from scoring.
They had the best chance in the 19th minutes when Vasco keeper lost possession on the ball where Nigerian striker Joel Sunday quickly got on to it but his chip shot rebounded off the crossbar with an empty goal.
At the other end, Vasco also had an opportunity in the 34th minutes when skipper Micky Fernandes smartly sent a free-kick to Franky Oliveiro in the box but his shot missed the target by a whisker.

Meanwhile, Salgaocar scored the two quick goals in the second quarter of the match as first Assumption Soares’ powerful shot from the right wing deflected off Vasco defender Treyson DD’Costa’s feet and entered the far post to make it 1-0 for Salgaocar in the 37th minutes.
Three minutes later, U-20 striker Devendra Murgaonkar stylishly headed in from close off Stephen Alvares’ curling cross from the left flank making it 2-0 for the Green Brigade.
Salgaocar coach Norbert brought in Clencio Pinto to replace Assumption at the halftime, and the striker made his impact on the match with a goal in the very first minute of the second session when he cut past a defender outside the box and shot past Vasco keeper Suresh from the top of the box.

Nigerian forward Sunday also added his name on the score sheet at the hour mark as the striker made an easy tap in the empty goal to Clencio’s through pass in the box for Salgaocar’s fifth goal.
