The Englishman stated that his side will aim to at least secure a spot in the playoffs this season.

Chennaiyin FC head coach John Gregory would look to put last season’s dismal performance behind and start afresh, as they play last campaign'’s finalists FC Goa away on Wednesday. Having won the title twice already, Chennaiyin would look to get back into contention for the crown after having revamped the squad with plenty of new signings.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, coach John Gregory was quick to note how challenging the opening games have been with Bengaluru FC away last season and FC Goa away to kick-start the 2019-20 ISL campaign. He stressed on the fact that plenty of the new foreign signings have to adapt to the league very quickly and that a tough challenge awaits this season.

Asked about the importance on finishing on top of the table he stated, "The prime objective is to make it to the playoffs and win the title. The approach, however, would change once the playoff spot has been secured."

Speaking about last season’s poor performance he said, "We didn’t achieve the standards we had set going into the season as champions. Now, with all the changes in the squad, we start again from scratch instilling our belief in the young domestic signings that have now come into the team."

John Gregory also rejoiced in the fact that Ahmed Jahouh would miss out on this clash saying, "Jahouh is probably my favourite player and has had a huge impact in FC Goa’s performance. I am very happy that he is not playing."

Jeje Lalpekhlua’s injury concerns and a new-look front three would certainly be a matter of concern for Chennaiyin FC, as they face tough competition from FC Goa who look forward to winning the title this season.
