Indian Super League (ISL) outfit ATK have parted ways with their Spanish midfielder Manuel Lanzarote by mutual consent.
The former FC Goa man joined the Red and Whites last season and carried the attacking and creative mantle of the side on his shoulders, with five goals and two assists. The team struggled to get going throughout the campaign, as they finished sixth in the league table, failing to qualify for the playoffs again. Steve Coppell's side salvaged some pride in the Super Cup, as the Kolkata-based club reached the semi-finals before losing 0-2 to Chennaiyin FC.
After the sacking of Coppell, former head coach Antonio Lopez Habbas was brought back, who had guided the side to their first ISL title triumph. Lanzarote did not suit the style of play Habas wants to incorporate, which led to the termination of contract of the Spaniard.
In his first season in India, Lanzarote caught several eyes as he bagged 13 goals and six assists. His bond with Ferran Corominas in the 2017 campaign was menacing for opposition defenders as the Gaurs netted 42 goals, the most in a term in ISL history till now.
However., the 35-year-old struggled to get going in Coppell's pragmatic and defensive approach and failed to replicate similar performances for the Red and Whites. Lanzarote has now returned to Spain and has joined Segunda B club CE Sabadell.
[KH_RELATED_NEWS title="Related News"][/KH_RELATED_NEWS]His departure should not affect ATK's prospects considering they have signed players like Roy Krishna, David Williams and Dario Vidosic on the attacking side of things. Lanzarote has experience of playing in clubs like Real Zaragoza and Espanyol before joining Greek club Asteras Tripoli and finally landing in India.
The Kolkata outfit currently have foreigners like Roy Krishna, David Williams, Carl McHugh, Dario Vidosic, Agustin Garcia, John Johnson and Edu Garcia. With rumours surrounding Javi Hernandez to join the fold soon, it looks like either of John Johnson or Edu Garcia will leave the club, considering every ISL club can only register seven foreigners.
