There is nothing more interesting than cross-town derbies in the world of football.

While the popularity of the sport has been on a steady rise throughout the world, especially in places like the United States and China during the past decade, football has always been Europe’s game.

European football culture is unlike any other in the world, nothing else even comes close. 55 nations contesting in their own topflight leagues with numerous Football clubs operating from common cities.

So, here are the top five cities from Europe that have the most number of football clubs currently playing in their top division. Surely, the cities will make the top holiday destinations for football fans.

1. LONDON

The capital of the United Kingdom is where the football action is at its peak with the presence of some big European clubs.

London is one of the largest and greatest cities in the world and boasts a total of 14 professional clubs playing in the top four tiers of English football.

Out of these, the city is home to Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Crystal Palace and West Ham United, which are currently competing in the Premier League 2019-20.

While three teams from Fulham, Charlton Athletic FC and Queens Park Rangers that have competed in the PL before.

Any player that wants to play topflight football would love to join a team located in the heart of London, with its beautiful and historic stadiums. Including the majestic Wembley and with fans that truly understand the passion of the game, being the perfect atmosphere for football.

2. ISTANBUL

Since the inception of Turkey's Super lig, there have been three major successful clubs sharing the limelight in the country commonly known as the 'Big Three', Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

All of these clubs are usually the main title contenders, season after season, and have never been relegated from the first division and are based out of Istanbul - the largest city of Turkey.

Apart from these big names that represent Turkey in European Tournaments, Istanbul is also home to Basaksehir FK and Kasimpasa that compete in the Super Lig as well, making it five teams.

3. MADRID

In recent years Spanish football clubs have conquered Europe ruthlessly, proving their worth in several of UEFA’s elite competitions. Right in the heart of Spain is the home of the most successful club in football history -  Real Madrid.

Their arch-rivals and the third biggest club in Spain, Atletico Madrid are also well supported in the city.

Apart from these two European powerhouses, the city is also home to Leganes and Getafe CF as well, making it a total of four clubs from the Spanish capital in La Liga.

4. MOSCOW

The sixth best league in Europe, the Russian Premier League has impressed a lot of critics lately.

The capital of the nation, Moscow has four clubs namely CSKA Moscow, Spartak Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow and Dynamo Moscow that are a part of the top division.

All four of these teams are amongst the top five ranked teams of the country according to official UEFA rankings.

Russia also successfully hosted the FIFA World Cup 2018, and the premier league has proved to be a platform for players to showcase their talent to the world.

5. ATHENS 

Football is the most popular sport in Greece and the country’s top-level competition, the Superleague, has a handful of clubs which have represented the nation in European tournaments.

The winners qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, while the other teams in the top five qualify for various playoffs and qualifying rounds.

Athens, Greece’s capital, is home to the most recognizable clubs in the league.

Nicknamed as ‘The Big Three’ due to their success in the country, the teams AEK Athens, Panathinaikos and Olympiacos have never been relegated from the first division and share a great rivalry between them and are usually the main contenders for the league title.
