Australian Open 2023: Top five contenders for Women's Singles Title

These women have a golden opportunity to win the title this year.

In just a few days time Tennis Action will shift down under in Australia. The 111th edition of the Australian Open is set to begin on 16th January 2023. Women’s setup is going to miss many players in the mix. Season’s first major title will start without players like Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty and Naomi Osaka. In 2022 Ashleigh Barty won the championship for the first time in her career and after the win, she announced her retirement from tennis in March 2022. Barty won the previous edition by defeating Danielle Collins by 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

With absence of few top names there are chances for the youngsters to get recognition. Australian Open is one tournament where few unexpected performances happen every season. This year too fans are expecting young players to showcase their talent and snatch the title. There are few names that doing rounds as top title contenders this season. Lets have a look at them.

5. Coco Gauff (USA)

Just 18 years old Coco Gauff has impressed everyone with her game since 2019 when she stunned the world by defeating Venus Williams in straight sets in Wimbledon 2019. Young and upcoming Gauff is yet to win a Grand Slam tournament in her career. She came close to winning French Open in 2022. Gauff had earned praises all around the World and many believe soon she will be dominating Women’s tennis. Coco gauff is currently World Number 7 in World Ranking.

4. Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus)

Current World Number 5 in World Ranking Aryna Sabalenka may not have gone past 4th round in Australian Open but her recent performance in US Open has opened the door for her in season’s first major title. Aryna Sabalenka was knocked out in Semi Finals. With experience either retired or out from the tournament, this opens the door for players like Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka had a mixed 2022 season. Aryna Sabalenka in the year 2021 with her double partner Elise Mertens won the championship.

3.  Caroline Garcia (France)

French experienced Tennis star Caroline Garcia’s recent performances have been brilliant, thus that made her one the firm favourites for the title. Garcia’s best in Australian Open tournament is playing 4th round. Garcia after playing in previous season’s US Open semi final and bagging WTA Finals against Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets has definitely brought spotlight on her. Caroline Garcia is currently paced at Number 4 in World Rankings. Garcia’s experience will also come handy for her in season’s first Grand Slam.

2. Ons Jabuer (Tunisia)

Current World Number 2 Ons Jabuer had a brilliant run of form in previous season. 28 year old Ons Jabuer played in Wimbledon and US Open final last year. Ons Jabuer had shown some great performances in previous season. Ons Jabuer’s best performance in Australian Open came in 2020 where she played in tournament’s Quarter Final. In previous edition Jabuer was injured thus she could not take part in the tournament. She is expected make use of the opportunity this year.

1 . Iga Swiatek (Poland)

Last year’s semi-finalist Iga Swiatek is the top most favourite player to lift the Australian Open 2023 title. Swiatek had recently won French Open and US Open in 2022. Swiatek’s game at the young age of 21 had shown glimpses of a champion player. Swiatek is currently ranked number one in World Ranking. With the absence of senior players she is expected to lift her third Grand Slam and first Australian Open title.
