A spirited performance by the Indian Men’s Hockey Team helped them register a thrilling 5-4 win against Australia here at the magnificent Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in the FIH Men’s Hockey Pro League 2022-23 on Sunday.
Riding on their impressive 3-2 win against reigning World Champions Germany, the Indian attack powered through each quarter setting up some mouth-watering goals against Australia. It was a hat-trick by Captain Harmanpreet Singh (14′, 15′, 56′), and a goal each by Jugraj Singh (18′) and Selvam Karthi (26′) that helped in India’s victory while Joshua Beltz (3′), Ky Willott (43′), Ben Staines (53′) and Aran Zalewski (57′) scored for Australia.
The Stakes

Last year, India hosted New Zealand and Spain in the first leg of the FIH Men’s Hockey Pro League. The hosts performed well, winning two matches against New Zealand and are currently in the second spot. India will be up against World Champions Germany and a formidable Australian side in the second leg.
Germany
Germany will come back with fresh memories after winning the World Cup in India. The Mats Grambusch-led German team is placed in the fourth spot with eleven points from six games. India and Australia shall look to strengthen their defence, especially at the fag end of the game. In the previous leg, they clinched a 3-2 win against Belgium, while they defeated Argentina 3-0. In the reverse fixture, they lost against Belgium while managing a draw against Argentina.
