Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty wrote history by winning bronze at BWF World Championships 2022

There were plenty of exciting matches on the penultimate day of the tournament.

Badminton fans worldwide have enjoyed the ongoing 2022 BWF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. The prestigious tournament saw sensational shuttlers participate from all corners of the world, including the Indian contingent. Despite a strong charge and securing a historic medal, India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty could not go all the way. They bow out of the tournament after losing their semi-final clash to the Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh. 

This also brings an end to India’s challenge at the 2022 edition of the BWF World Championships. The country won two medals in the previous edition but has to settle for only one bronze this time around. Having said that, it is a historic first-ever medal by an Indian pair at the championship.

Several other high-profile players were in action across various different categories as the tournament reaches its conclusion. Here is the roundup of Saturday’s results at the 2022 BWF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan:

Men’s Singles

Viktor Axelsen was in his usual form and made short work of fourth seed Chen Tien Chou of Chinese Taipei. The Danish shuttler won comfortably by 21-15 21-17 to reach the final of the Men’s Singles bracket. He will face Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand who beat China’s Junpeng Zhao by a 22-20, 21-6 score.

Women’s Singles

Men’s Doubles

The 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost their semi-final clash to Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh. Despite creating history and winning India’s first-ever World Championships medal in Men’s Doubles, the Thomas Cup-winning pair came up short in a thrilling match.

Malaysian shuttlers will advance to the final after a 20-22, 21-18, 21-16 win over the Indians. They will face Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the final of BWF World Championships. The third seeds beat their compatriots Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Ardianto by 23-21, 12-21, 21-16 in the other semi-final.

Women’s Doubles

Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan, the top seeds, made their way into the final of the Women’s Doubles bracket. The reigning champions beat Mayu Matsumoto and Wakana Nagahara of Japan by 21-13, 21-14 to reach the final. 

They will face off against the South Korean pair of Kim So-Yeong and Kong Hee-Yong. The last edition’s bronze winners beat Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand to reach the final.

Mixed Doubles

Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino advanced into the final of the Mixed Doubles after winning their semi-final against the German pair of Mark Lamsfuss and Isabel Lohau. The Japanese duo won by 21-8, 21-6 inside 28 minutes only at BWF World Championships.
