Jannik Sinner caused an upset by defeating fifth seed Carlos Alcaraz.

The competition is heating up at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. It is heading towards the business end with Sunday’s action further filtering the winners from the losers. One of the major favourites to win the competition, Novak Djokovic, made his way into the quarter-final of the Men’s Singles. World No.3 came up against Tim van Rijthoven of the Netherlands and won the game by a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 score.

Despite a difference of 101 places in rankings between the players, Rijthoven gave a good account of himself. Stealing a set from the reigning champions and the top seed deserves applause. However, after the game became level at one set each, Djokovic took his performance up a notch and finished the tie in style within two hours and 38 minutes. The Serbian will now play Jannik Sinner in the next round who is on a giant-killing spree.

Ona Jabeur, the third seed in Women’s Singles took her place in the quarter-final of Wimbledon. The 27-year-old got the better of Elise Mertens of Belgium by a 7-6(11-9), 6-4 score. World No. 2 in WTA rankings was too good for World No.31 despite the latter coming into the match after eliminating Angelique Kerber in the previous round.

Jannik Sinner caused an upset at the 2022 Wimbledon. Post defeating John Isner, the tenth seed got the better of the fifth seed, Carlos Alcaraz. The 20-year-old American won the high-intensity contest by 6-1, 6-4, 6-7(8-10), 6-3 after a gruelling three-hour and 35 minutes-long duel.

Doubles Action

There were several important matches in the doubles category on Sunday. Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury were one of the major pairings that were in action. The top seeds in Men’s Doubles met 16th seeds Rafael Matos of Brazil and David Vega Hernandez of Spain. Beating their opponents by 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, the duo of Ram and Salisbury made their way into the next round.

In the Women’s Doubles, second seeds Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic won their third-round match. They reach the next round after a comfortable 7-6(7-2), 6-4 victory over Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium and Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain.

There was disappointment in store for the high-profile pairing of Jamie Murray and Venus Williams. The duo came up against United Kingdom’s Jonny O'Mara and Alicia Barnett who beat them by 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(18-16). It took two hours and 12 minutes to separate the two teams. Sania Mirza of India and her partner Mate Pavic of Croatia got a walkover into the next round where they will face John Peers and Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada in a high-octane clash.
