Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Major events to watch this week

The Asian Wrestling Championships will be one of the big events from this week.

The following week will be an important one in the Indian Sports Calendar with the Asian Wrestling Championships and a few important tennis tournaments taking place. Breakdancing was added to the 2024 Paris Olympics and the qualifying event for the same is set to take place in Rio, Brazil this week. 

Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (09 April - 15 April) in the Indian sports calendar.

Football

April 08-25 April - Super Cup

Tennis

April 08-16 April - Monte Carlo Masters (ATP 1000)

Doubles - Rohan Bopanna / Matthew Ebden

Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will look to come back stronger after losing in the opening round at the Miami Masters. Rohan Bopanna became the oldest player to win an ATP Masters title (Indian Wells) and will look to start the clay court season on a positive note.

April 09-16 April - ATP Challenger Sarasota (ATP 125)

Doubles - Yuki Bhambri / Saketh Myneni

Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni, fondly called YukiSaki, lost in the opening round at ATP 250 Houston Open last week. This week they will look to come back strong playing in the Challenger event ahead of the French Open (Grand Slam).

April 10-16 April - ATP Split Challenger (ATP 75)

Singles - Sumit Nagal

Doubles - Vijay Sundar Prasanth/Anirudh Chandrasekhar 

Sumit Nagal will be making a return to his favourite season (clay court) after a month's break. Sumit lost in the opening round of the Barletta Challenger last week. 

April 10-16 April - ATP Madrid Challenger (ATP 75)

Doubles - Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan / Sriram Balaji

April 10-15 April - Billie Jean Cup Qualifiers

The Indian women’s team are placed in Group I (Asia/Oceania Zone). The top two teams (from six teams overall) will progress further while the bottom two teams will be relegated to Group II.

Table Tennis

April 09-15 April - WTT Champions Xinxiang

Singles - Manika Batra

Manika Batra will be the lone Indian participating in the prestigious event.

Athletics

April 10 - Indian Grand Prix 3, Bengaluru

April 15 - Indian Grand Prix 4, Bengaluru

Top Indian athletes - Jyoti Yarraji, Murali Sreesankar, etc., are set to participate in the Indian Grand Prix 3 and 4.

Breakdance

April 14-16 April - Breakdance for Gold, Rio 

Wrestling

April 09-14 April - Asian Wrestling Championships

The second rung wrestlers shall look to make a mark in the absence of Olympians - Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat.

Shooting

April 11-22 April - ISSF Rifle/Pistol World Cup, Peru
