Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Major events to watch in second week of May
Rohan Bopanna will be the lone Indian taking part in the Rome Masters.
A lot of sporting events are lined up for the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. Rohan Bopanna will once again be in action this week at the Rome Masters. He made it to the final last week and will look to carry forward the momentum ahead of the French Open. A few Indian boxers have progressed to the next stages of the men's world boxing championships and shall look to medal this week.
Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (May 07-13 April) in the Indian sports calendar.
Tennis
May 08–21: Rome Masters (ATP 1000)
Doubles – Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden
Rohan Bopanna is the lone Indian to feature in the main draw of the ATP Rome Masters. Bopanna,43, reached the final last week at the Madrid Open and will look to continue the same form. Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni currently feature in the alternate list.
May 07-14: Mauthausen Challenger (ATP 100)
Singles - Sumit Nagal
India's number one singles player, Sumit Nagal will be back in action after a week's break. He is set to play the qualifying round scheduled to be held on 07 May (Sunday).
May 07-14: Busan Challenger (ATP 125)
Singles - Sasikumar Mukund (lost in the first qualifying round)
Doubles - Anirudh Chandrasekhar/Vijay Sundar Prasanth and Arjun Khade/Nam Ji-Sung
After a semi-final finish last week, Anirudh and Vijay Sundar will look to carry forward the momentum in the Busan Challenger. India's lone singles player Sasikumar Mukund lost in the opening round of the qualifiers.
Weightlifting
May 03–13: Asian Weightlifting Championships
Achinta Sheuli and Ajith Narayana will be in action next week in the men's 73kg. Last week, Olympic silver medallist, Mirabai Chanu finished in the sixth spot in women's 49kg. In the men's section, Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the silver medal in snatch but couldn't register an overall lift.
Judo
May 07– 14: World Judo Championships, Doha
Squad
Men’s – Arun Kumar (73kg) and Avtar Singh (100kg)
Women’s – Tulika Maan (+78kg)
Three Indian Judokas are set to take part in the World Judo Championships. Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medallist Tukila Maan will be in action alongside Rio Olympian Avtar Singh.
Fencing
May 12-14: Coupe De Monde (Sabre)
Karan Singh and Bhavani Devi will be leading the Indian contingent in the men’s and women’s section. Bhavani Devi stood 56th at the Seoul Grand Prix held last month of the Indian Sports Calendar.
Boxing
May 01–14: IBA Men’s Boxing Championships
Top Indian boxers Hussamuddin (quarter-finals) and Deepak Bhoria (pre-quarterfinals) have performed well so far and are just a few rounds away from securing a medal.
