Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Events to watch in second week of August

World Sailing Championships 2023 will begin later this week.

A lot of sporting events are lined up in the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. The Asian Champions Trophy, which will be the last tournament to test grounds ahead of the Hangzhou Asian Games, is set to enter the final stages this week. The Indian cricket team are in the closing stages of their Carribean tour and will look to end the tour on a high.

Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (August 07- 13) in the Indian sports calendar.

Cricket

After winning the Test and ODI series, the bandwagon shifted to the shorter format – T20Is. The Indian cricket team lost the opening encounter by four wickets with West Indies registering their second win overall in this series. India is slated to play four more T20Is with the last two scheduled to be played in Florida.

Cycling

Top Indian cyclists Esow Alben and Ronaldo Singh are set to spearhead the Indian contingent at the World Cycling Championships. Ronaldo Singh broke two NR at the Asian Championships in June and will look to continue the same at the Worlds.

Football

The 132nd edition of the Durand Cup has started off in a bright with ISL champions Mohun Bagan Super Giants registering a comfortable victory in the opening encounter. NorthEast United’s Parthib Gogoi scored the first hat-trick of this edition in just the second match against Shillong Lajong. The tournament is set to be held till August 3rd with several teams yet to play their matches.

Hockey

The seventh edition of the Asian Champions Trophy started in a bright fashion with India registering a (7-2) victory against neighbours China. However, the blue colts couldn’t replicate the same performance in the second match playing out a draw against Japan (1-1); converting only 1 out of 14 penalty corners. There are still three more matches to be played with the top four making it to the semi-finals.

Sailing

The Indian sailors after taking part in the Olympics test event last month will be back to action with a span of weeks for World Sailing Championships. This will be the sixth edition of the World and a total of 12 titles are at stake. Tokyo Olympians, Nethra Kumanan and Vishnu Saravanan will be spearheading the Indian contingent.

Table Tennis

The South American leg of WTT series shifts from Lima to Rio next week. India’s top ranked singles player Manika Batra lost in the opening rounds in both the singles and mixed doubles (partnering Sathiyan Ganansekaran).

Tennis

Two Indian players have entered the prestigious Toronto Masters open in Canada. Sasikumar Mukund entered the tournament as an alternate and will have to proceed to the main draw by winning the qualifiers. Rohan Bopanna after a brief break is set to partner Ebden before the all-important US Open.

Volleyball

The Indian U-19 Volleyball team have had a tough outing so far losing all the three matches – Japan, France, and Slovenia in the group stages. Next up the youngsters are set to face a stiff battle against Bulgaria in the last group game post which the classification matches will be held.
