Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Events to watch in third week of August
Two Paris Olympics 2023 qualifying tournaments will be held this week.
A lot of sporting events are lined up in the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. Two Paris Olympics 2024 qualifying tournaments are set to be held this week in Basketball (men’s) and Handball (women’s). Apart from these, World Shooting Championships is set to offer quota places to the top four finishes in each event for Paris.
Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (August 14-20) in the Indian sports calendar.
Archery
After a successful conclusion of World Archery Championships, the action now moves to fourth and final stage of the World Cup scheduled to be held in Paris. Experienced archer, Atanu Das comes back into the squad to bolster the recurve squad.
- August 15-20: Archery World Cup Stage IV Paris
Basketball
A total of six teams are set to take part in the Olympics pre-qualifying Asia Championship in Syria. The winner of this tournament will qualify for the 2024 FIBA Men’s Olympic qualifying tournaments. Each team plays each other once and the team to top the table qualifies.
- August 12-17: FIBA Olympic Pre-Qualifying Tournament Asia
Cricket
After a successful tour of West Indies, the Indian men’s cricket team heads to Ireland to take part in a three -match T20I series. Jasprit Bumrah, who is returning back from injury is set to lead the side in the absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya.
- August 18-23: India tour of Ireland
Football
Several teams have opened their account in the 132nd edition of Durand Cup – Asia’s oldest tournament. East Bengal after a four-year hiatus have finally defeated their rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giants in the Kolkata Derby. Top teams from each of the six groups alongside two second placed best teams will progress to the quarter-finals.

Handball
A total of five teams — India, China, Japan, Korea, and Kazakhstan are slated to take part in the 2024 Olympics qualifiers scheduled to be held in Japan. The winner of the competition secures a direct quota to Paris. The team which finishes second progresses to the World qualification tournament.
- August 17-23: Asian Women’s qualifiers
Sailing
The Indian sailors after taking part in the Olympics test event last month will be back to action with a span of weeks for Sailing World Championships. 20 Indian sailors are taking part in the competition with Tokyo Olympian Nethra Kumanan spearheading the Indian contingent.

Shooting
The second Shooting World Championships in the Olympics qualification year is scheduled to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Three shooters Rudrankksh Patil, Swapnil Kusare, and Bhowneesh Mendiratta have secured a quota each in their respective categories at last year’s Worlds and others would look to add a few more slots for Paris 2024.
- August 17-31: ISSF World Shooting Championships
Tennis
After losing in the quarter-finals of Canadian Open last week, the Indo-Australian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will look to gain momentum ahead of the US Open by taking part in yet another ATP Masters event at Cincinatti this week. On the other hand, six Indians will be taking part in Lotto Kozerki Challenger competition in Poland.

Men’s Doubles – Purav Raja/Ramkumar Ramanathan
Volleyball
Asian Volleyball Championships will be looked in as a preparatory tournament for the Asian Games. The men’s team have gained good experience and exposure by playing alongside foreign stars in the Prime Volleyball League (S2) and this will also be their first national assignment post the PVL.
