Indian Sports Calendar in 2023: Events to watch in fourth week of August
World Championships events in several sporting disciplines will take place this week.
A lot of sporting events are lined up in the upcoming week of the Indian sports calendar. Two most awaited competitions are set to begin this week – the BWF World Championships and the World Athletics Championships. Apart from these, the shooting contingent continue their campaign in the ISSF World Championships and will look to win maximum Olympic quotas on offer.
Here we take a look at the events to follow in the upcoming week (August 21-27) in the Indian sports calendar.
Athletics
After the removal of Bhawna Jat, 27-member Indian contingent is set to participate at the World Athletics Championships 2023. This is the highest number of participants in a single edition for India and Neeraj Chopra remains the firm favorite to bag a medal and also become the first Indian athlete to bag two medals at the Worlds.

Badminton
A 14-member Indian contingent is set to participate in the BWF World Championships 2023. The draws for the same has been released a few days back with several seeded received bye in the opening round. India has won atleast one medal since the 2013 edition and this time there are high chances of the shuttlers winning multiple medals for the country.

Cricket
The Indian men’s cricket team has the started their T20I series against Ireland on a positive note by winning the opening encounter. Jasprit Bumrah who returned from injury after a long hiatus took two wickets in the opening over bringing back his heroics.
- August 18-23: India’s tour of Ireland (Ongoing)
Football
Group stages of the prestigious Durand Cup is nearing its final stages with several team booking their spot in the quarter-finals. Chennaiyin FC remained unbeaten in Group E winning all the three matches and comfortably booked a quarter-final spot. The group toppers of six groups alongside two best second placed sides across group make it to the quarters.

Shooting
In the opening few days, India has so far won five medals (3 gold and 2 bronze medal each). The opening day however wasn’t that bright with the pistol shooting contingent putting up a below average performance but with other major events still left, the Indian contingent will look to make use of the opportunity.
- August 17-31: ISSF World Shooting Championships
Tennis
Indian men’s doubles players continue their Challenger circuit ahead of the final Grand Slam this season. Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden who initially entered the Winston-Salem Open (ATP 250) have withdrawn from the tournament.
- August 20-26: ATP Augsburg Challenger
Men’s Doubles – Purav Raja/Ramkumar Ramanathan

Volleyball
After a long hiatus, Indian men’s volleyball team are back in action for the Asian Volleyball Championship 2023. The winner of the tournament qualifies directly for the World Championships 2025. India however will be using this tournament as a pre-cursor to the Asian Games scheduled to be held next month.
