Total medals won by India in each sport at the Olympics

India have so far won 41 Olympic medals in 26 editions of the Olympics.

India has been participating at the Olympics for more than a century now. The first and second medal for India came in the 1900 Paris Olympics in athletics. Since then, the country has won 39 more medals at the summer games.

India’s first Olympic gold medal was recorded at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics in men’s hockey. Twenty years later, the first Olympic gold medal since Independence was also recorded by the men’s hockey team.

Abhinav Bindra in the Beijing 2008 became the first individual gold medalist from India. He won the gold in 10m air rifle shooting.

The men’s hockey team has been the most successful for the nation at the summer games with 13 medals. Field Hockey is the only event where the nation has a double-digit medal tally.

In Individual events, KD Jadhav secured the bronze medal in men’s wrestling freestyle 57 kg during the 1952 Helsinki Olympics. He was the first athlete to win a individual medal for Independent India.

Norman Pritchard had won the first ever medal for India during the 1900 Paris Olympics. He secured silver medals in 200m and 200m hurdles. Pritchard is the first athlete to win multiple medals in a single edition of summer games from India.

Karnam Malleshwari became the first Indian woman to win a medal at the summer games in 2000 at Sydney. She claimed the silver medal in Weightlifting 69kgs.

There have only been four athletes from the country who have won more than a single medal in mutliple editions of the summer games. Sushil Kumar was the first athlete to win two medals for the country. 

He won the bronze medal in 2008 at Beijing in wrestling freestyle 66kg and silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics in the same category.

PV Sindhu became the second athlete and the first woman to win two medals for the nation at the summer games. Sindhu won the silver medal in badminton singles at 2016 Rio Olympics and the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Sindhu at the age of 21 years became India’s youngest athlete to win a medal for the nation during the 2016 Rio Olympics. During the 2004 Athens Olympics, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore became the oldest Indian Olympic medallist when he won the silver medal in shotgun shooting double trap.

Neeraj Chopra is the first Indian to win a gold medal in athletics. He won the gold in Javelin throw during the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He won the silver medal in men’s javelin throw at Paris Olympics 2024.

Manu Bhaker won the first medal for India at the Paris Olympics 2024. She secured the bronze medal in 10m air pistol shooting event. Bhaker is the first Indian women shooter to win an Olympic medal.

The 22-year-old became the first Indian since Indepedence to win two medals in a single edition of the summer games. Bhaker won the bronze medal with Sarabjot Singh in mixed team 10m air pistol event.

Shooter Swapnil Kusale won India’s third medal at Paris Olympics 2024. He won the bronze medal in 50m Rifle Three Positions. The 28-year-old won the nation’s first ever Olympic medal in 50m three positions event.

The Indian men’s hockey team won their 13th Olympic medal at Paris. The men in blue secured the bronze medal after defeating Spain 2-1.

Aman Sehrawat secured India’s 41st medal at the Olympics with a bronze at Paris Olympics 2024 in men’s 57 kg wrestling.
