Messi and Di Maria could both be allowed to play in Paris Olympics
After Argentina secured an Olympic allocation for the men’s football competition in Paris 2024, Under-23 coach Javier Mascherano declared his desire to extend an invitation to Lionel Messi and Di Maria to join the Olympic team.
Will football legends from Argentina, Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria, compete in Paris in 2024 for a second Olympic gold medal?Yes, if it were up to under-23 manager Javier Mascherano’s decision.During the 2024 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Championship on Monday, February 12, Argentina beat Brazil, the current gold medal winners, 1-0, to guarantee a spot in the next Games in France.
“Everyone already knows my relationship with Leo [Messi] and with Angel [Di Maria]: We are friends. As a coach, I have an obligation to invite them,” Messi’s former Argentina and Barcelona teammate Mascherano told reporters after the game. “But we also understand they have other commitments, and it will depend on that too.”
“I hope Messi has the desire and can be at the Olympic games, it would be a dream,” current under-23 captain Thiago Almada said, suggesting he would be happy to hand his armband over to Messi.

The triumph opens the door for Messi and Di Maria to build on their Beijing 2008 brilliance by winning another Olympic gold medal.
Along with Di Maria, Messi led Argentina to their third FIFA World Cup victory in December 2022. He was also a member of the squad that won Olympic gold in Beijing.Messi and Di Maria may participate if they so desire because men’s football teams at the Games are limited to three overage players and must consist entirely of under-23 players.
Di Maria and the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi have not yet responded to questions about whether they would represent their nation in Paris, even as anticipation builds.
