India-Australia pair Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden will eye a place in the Wimbledon 2023 quarter-finals when they meet David Pel/Reese Stalder in the men's doubles round of 16 match on July 11 (Tuesday). The pair will be in action on Court 12 against the Dutch-US opponents.
At 43, Bopanna is the oldest player competing at Wimbledon 2023. On Monday, the sixth seeds saw off unseeded British pair Jacob Fearnley and Johannus Monday in straight sets. Bopanna and Ebden beat the British pair 7-5, 6-3 in just a little more than an hour.
The Indian Wells and Qatar Open champions made a sluggish start to the contest and were trailing 1-3 against the local opponents. However, they levelled soon at 4-4 and took control of the set. In the second set they started well and in no time raced to a 4-1 lead and then sealed a victory to move into the pre-quarterfinals round in men's doubles.
Earlier, the pair beat another unseeded Argentine opponents Guillermo Duran and Tomas Etcheverry in the opening round. They won 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 in a thrilling clash.
Bopanna is the only remaining Indian at Wimbledon 2023. Although he has reached the last 16 in men's doubles, the 43-year-old and mixed doubles partner Gabriela Dabrowski were knocked out from the first round. Fellow men's doubles pair Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni also exited from the Grand Slam event after an opening round exit. Similarly, N Sriram Balaji and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan also bowed out after opening round defeat. In the women's section, Ankita Raina from India took part in the qualifiers where she was beaten.
