The US Open 2023, season's final Grand Slam enters its final stages. The tennis world is abuzz with excitement as defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will play against 12th seed and US Open 2020 runner-up Alexander Zverev for a place in the semifinals in men's singles at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Alcaraz, 20, is looking to successfully defend his US Open title. He reached quarterfinals with wins over Dominik Koepfer, Lloyd Harris, Dan Evans, and Matteo Arnaldi in the first four rounds respectively. Overall in his progress to the quarterfinals, Alcaraz has only lost one set against Dan Evans in the third round.
On the other hand, Zverev knocked out Aleksandar Vukic, Daniel Altmaier and Grigor Dimitrov to set up a fourth-round duel against Jannik Sinner, whom he defeated in a five-set epic thriller (6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3) with the match lasting 4 hours and 41 minutes.
Preview
Alcaraz quickly established himself as one of the most exciting tennis players having already won the US Open title last year and is all set to retain back the Championships. Few weeks back, the Spaniard reached the Cincinnati Masters final where he was defeated by Djokovic but overall has looked in fine form.
Meanwhile, Zverev, who is a more experienced player, has been struggling with consistency in recent years due to frequent injuries. The 12th seed has had a good run prior to the US Open - reaching the semifinals of Cincinnati Masters. After a thrilling five sets encounter against Sinner, the German international will look to carry forward momentum against Zverev.
Head to head
Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev have met each other seven times with the latter leading the former by 3-2. However, the Spaniard won their most recent encounter at the Madrid Open 2023 in straight sets. Although history is in favor of Zverev, considering the head-to-head battle, it doesn't matter now as his two out of the three wins came in Alcaraz's formative years.
