The Serbian has won 24 Grand Slam titles so far.
Novak Djokovic’s 2023 season can officially go on the record as one of his best years. From the Brisbane International held in January to representing Serbia in the Davis Cup in November, it was a record-breaking year with even a calendar grand slam seemingly within reach. While he missed out on emulating Rod Laver and Don Budge’s record, there are plenty of other records that he claimed as his own.
In this article let’s discuss a few of the achievements Novak Djokovic has created in 2023
Most Grand Slam titles won
Novak Djokovic went past Rafael Nadal by winning three Grand Slams and now has a haul of 24 Major titles. The Serbian came close to winning a calendar slam but was thwarted by Carlos Alcaraz at the Wimbledon Championships. Only two men have won calendar slams – Don Budge in 1938, and Rod Laver in 1962 and a repeat in 1969.
Furthermore, Djokovic also became the oldest man at 36 years and 111 days to have won the men’s singles title at the US Open.
Most ATP Masters titles
When Djokovic won the Paris Masters, it was a record-extending 40th ATP Masters title. Nadal is second on the list with 36 wins, while Federer has 28. The Serbian also won the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati against Carlos Alcaraz, coming back from a set down to prevail against the Spaniard. Moreover, Djokovic is the only player to have won all nine masters titles since its inception in 1990.
Most ATP Finals trophies
Fondly called ‘Nole’ was tied with Roger Federer at six titles at the ATP Finals. In 2023, he moved ahead of the Swiss legend and won his seventh title by defeating local hero Jannik Sinner in Turin. The win was also his 71st ‘Big Title’ – a combination of Grand Slams, ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, ATP Finals, and Olympic singles gold.
Only an Olympic gold medal still eludes the world no.1. The Serbian’s best performance in the Olympics was winning bronze in Beijing 2008.
Most years as year-ending World No. 1
Novak Djokovic was involved in a back-and-forth tussle for the honour of finishing the year as world no. 1. Despite Alcaraz’s challenge, Djokovic came out on top. He clinched his record-extending eighth ATP year-end no. 1 presented by Pepperstone in the opening stages of the Nitto ATP Finals by defeating Holger Rune.
Djokovic leads the list of most year-end finishes on top of the ATP rankings, followed by Pete Sampras with six. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Jimmy Connors are tied in third place with five.
Most weeks as World No. 1
Novak Djokovic began his 400th week as world no. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings in November after winning the Nitto ATP Finals, adding another feather to his cap. Earlier this year, he passed Steffi Graf’s record of 377 weeks as world no. 1 to become the only player in either gender to have breached the 400-week mark. The record for most consecutive weeks as world no. 1 belongs to Federer, standing at 237 weeks.
Novak Djokovic is within striking distance of his 100th title, he is currently on 98. Only Roger Federer with 103 and Jimmy Connors at 109 are ahead of him. The Serbian will next be seen in action at the United Cup and will return to Melbourne to defend his Australian Open crown. The United Cup is a mixed-team event scheduled to be held in Perth and Sydney.
