Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic in exhibition match in Riyadh

The Spaniard earlier defeated the world no.1 in Wimbledon final.
Carlos Alcaraz pulled off a stunning win over world no. 1 Novak Djokovic in a three-set thriller at the Riyadh Season Tennis Cup on Wednesday. The 20-year-old Spaniard came back from a set down to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in front of a packed crowd at the HOC Stadium in the Saudi capital.
The match, which was part of the Riyadh Season festival, was a showcase of the best of men’s tennis, as the two players displayed their skills on the court. Although it was just an exhibition, both players gave their best and treated the fans to a high-quality contest.
Djokovic, who had a stellar 2023 season with seven titles, including three Grand Slams and the ATP Finals, started strongly and took the first set 6-4. He looked in control and seemed to be heading for a comfortable victory. However, Alcaraz, who had a breakthrough year with six titles, including Wimbledon and two Masters 1000 events, fought back and raised his level in the second set.
The final set was a tense and tight affair, as both players held their serves until the ninth game when Alcaraz seized his opportunity and broke Djokovic with a stunning forehand winner. He then served out the match, sealing his win over the world no. 1.
Carlos Alcaraz, the first Spaniard to lift the Wimbledon trophy since Rafael Nadal in 2010, defeated Novak Djokovic for the third time in 2023. It was their sixth encounter, the tie has seen them forge a thrilling rivalry. Carlos Alcaraz leveled the head-to-head record with Novak Djokovic at 3-3, after winning against him at the Riyadh Exhibition match.
The exhibition match in Riyadh was also a warm-up for both players, as they prepare for the Australian Open, which starts on January 14th. Djokovic will be aiming for his 11th title in Melbourne, while Alcaraz will be looking to continue his impressive form and challenge for his third Grand Slam title.
