Singles players who have withdrawn from Australian Open 2024
Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal, the 22-time grand slam champion, has become the first player to withdraw from the upcoming Australian Open. After a nearly year-long hiatus due to a hip injury sustained at last year’s Australian Open, Nadal made his return in Brisbane. Unfortunately, he encountered another issue in the same area during a quarterfinal defeat to Jordan Thompson last week.
Despite this setback, Nadal remains optimistic that the injury is not too severe and is hopeful for a swift recovery to resume playing at a high level, aiming to return in time for the clay court season.
Reilly Opelka
Opeka known for his powerful serves, has become the second player to withdraw from the imminent Australian Open. The American, grappling with prolonged injury concerns, faced setbacks in his attempt at a comeback. Having missed all four Grand Slams last year due to a persistent hip injury, Opelka’s return was hindered by a recent wrist injury.
Despite his recovery from the previous hip issue, the unresolved wrist injury has compelled him to delay his return to professional tennis, contributing to his withdrawal from the Australian Open.
Dominic Stricker
Stricker joins the list of withdrawals from the Australian Open, citing back injury as the reason for his decision. Despite this setback, the Swiss player remains optimistic and vows to return even stronger after recovering from the injury.
Stricker had an impressive run to the fourth round of the US Open last year, securing notable victories, including one against 2023 Australian Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas. With aspirations to replicate such achievements, he sets his sights on reaching similar heights upon his return to competitive tennis.
Lauren Davis
Davis has become the latest women’s player to withdraw from the Australian Open, citing a persistent shoulder injury, which she attributes to the frequent ball changes on the Tour. Despite reaching the second round in Melbourne last year, Davis will not have the opportunity to build on that performance in 2024 due to this injury-induced withdrawal.
