Swiatek defeated Qinwen Cheng in United Cup.
Iga Swiatek, the Polish tennis sensation, has reached another milestone in her illustrious career. The 22-year-old has registered her 100th win as the WTA World No. 1, becoming only the eighth player in history to achieve this feat.
The four-time grand slam winner achieved this landmark with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over China’s Qinwen Zheng in the United Cup in Perth on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. With the win, she also led her country to the semifinals of the team event, where they will face Russia.
Swiatek has been dominating the women’s tennis circuit since she took over the top spot in April 2022, following her second French Open title. She has won four Grand Slam singles titles, including the US Open in 2022 and the French Open in 2020, 2022, and 2023. She has also won the WTA Finals in 2023, and several other WTA 1000 and WTA 500 events.
With this win, Swiatek is now in seventh place in the number of matches played as the World No. 1. She has overtaken Justine Henin, who played 115 matches as the No. 1. The only players ahead of her are Serena Williams (319), Steffi Graf (314), Martina Navratilova (306), Chris Evert (293), Martina Hingis (209) and Monica Seles (178).
