India will visit Pakistan for their first Davis cup match since 1964
India and Pakistan are set to renew their historic rivalry in the Davis Cup 2024 World Group I Play-Off, which will be the first time the Indian tennis team will visit Pakistan in six decades.
The Indians qualified for the play-off after defeating Morocco 4-1 in the World Group II Play-Off in Lucknow last year. A win over Pakistan will secure their spot in the World Group I, where they will face tougher opponents in September.
However, the Indian team will be without two of their key players: veteran Rohan Bopanna, who retired from Davis Cup last year, and Sumit Nagal, the highest-ranked Indian singles player at No. 121, who opted out due to personal reasons.
The singles responsibility will fall on Ramkumar Ramanathan, ranked 461st in the world, and Sriram Balaji, who will play the first and second singles matches respectively on Saturday. Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni will team up for the doubles match on Sunday.
Pakistan, on the other hand, will rely on their experienced duo of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Aqeel Khan, who are unranked but have played several Davis Cup ties for their country. Their best-ranked singles player is Muzammil Murtaza, who is at No. 1681 in the world.
The Indian team will be led by coach-cum-captain Zeeshan Ali, who stepped in after Rohit Rajpal pulled out of the tie for personal reasons.
India has a dominant record against Pakistan in the Davis Cup, winning all seven of their previous encounters. The last time they met in Pakistan was in 1964 when India won 4-0. The Indians will hope to extend their unbeaten streak and advance to the World Group I.
