The Pune Open 2024, a prestigious ATP Challenger Tour event, kicks off on Monday at Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune. The tournament, also known as Pune Metropolitan Regional Challenger, features some of the best players from India and abroad.
Sumit Nagal, who reached the second round of the Australian Open in January, is the top seed and India’s best hope at the event. The India No.1, who is ranked 98th in the world, will face Chinese Taipei’s Yu Hsiou Hsu, ranked 228th, in his first match.
Two other Indians, Mukund Sasikumar and Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha, have also received wild card entries for the singles main draw. Niki and Ramkumar Ramanathan are part of the eleven Indian players who will compete in the doubles draw as well.
The top seeds in doubles are India’s Arjun Kadhe and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. The second seeds are Australia’s Matthew Romios and Poland’s Piotr Matuszewski.
Three Indian players also participated in the qualification rounds for singles, which were held on Sunday. However, none of them could qualify for the main draw.
