Novak Djokovic is level with Roger Federer for most Indian Wells Masters titles.

The Indian Wells Open 2024, also its 47th, is set to commence in Indian Wells, California, from March 6. Initially, from 1976 to 1988, it was a men-only event. The tournament welcomed women players in 1989, transitioning to a mixed-gender event.

Jimmy Connors claimed the first-ever Indian Wells trophy in its inaugural year, 1976. In 1989, Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria and Miloslav Mecir of Slovakia won the women’s and men’s titles, respectively.

The BNP Paribas Open is the first of nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments held annually. The ATP Masters calendar concludes with the Paris Masters in November. The WTA 1000 calendar begins with the Qatar Open and ends with the Wuhan Open in mid-October.

The women’s calendar features 10 events, six of which coincide with the men’s schedule: the BNP Paribas Open, Miami Open, Mutua Madrid Open, Internazionali BNL d’Italia, National Bank Open, and the Cincinnati Open.

The Indian Wells Open heralds the return of Rafael Nadal, a three-time champion. Joining him are defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, 2024 Australian Open winner Jannik Sinner, five-time Indian Wells victor Novak Djokovic after a five-year break, last year’s finalist Daniil Medvedev, and past winners Taylor Fritz and Cameron Norrie from 2022 and 2021, respectively.

Elena Rybakina, the women’s defending champion, will participate. Former champions Victoria Azarenka, Naomi Osaka, Paula Badosa, and World No. 1 Iga Swiatek are also returning.

Iga Swiatek, having received a first-round bye, will face Danielle Collins in the second round. She may encounter her Melbourne Park vanquisher, Linda Noskova, in the third round. Ons Jabeur could meet Mirra Andreeva, who ousted her in the Australian Open’s second round, if she advances past Katie Volynets.

Rafael Nadal will confront Milas Raonic in his opening match. Nadal leads their head-to-head 8-2, but Raonic won their only desert meeting in 2015 with a score of 4-6, 7-6(10), 7-5. Nadal could face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Djokovic will play Australian qualifier Aleksandar Vukic in the second round and possibly Etcheverry in the third. His significant challenges may arise in the quarterfinals against Hubert Hurkacz or Casper Ruud.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is set to play either Luca Van Assche or Matteo Arnaldi in the second round. A potential quarterfinal against De Minaur and a subsequent match with Jannik Sinner loom in the latter stages.

Jannik Sinner will compete against Czech teenager Jakub Mensik, who recently entered the top 100 after a strong performance in Doha. Sinner may have a rematch with Medvedev in the final if both progress that far.

When is Indian Wells Open 2024 scheduled for?

The main draw gets underway on March 6 (Wednesday), and winds up on March 17th — the day that will see both the men’s and women’s finalists take to court for their winner-take-all games.
