Big names have withdrawn from the Indian Wells Open 2024.

The BNP Paribas Open, also known as the Indian Wells Open 2024, is scheduled to begin on March 6 and end on March 17 in Indian Wells, California. This premier ATP and WTA 1000 tournament will showcase the world’s top players on outdoor hard courts.

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz faces stiff competition from five-time winner Novak Djokovic, Australian Open 2024 champion Jannik Sinner, runner-up Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, and Alexander Zverev. World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, and reigning champion Elena Rybakina are poised to deliver thrilling performances on the women’s side.

However, the absence of several key players from this year’s event, often referred to as the “fifth Grand Slam,” has disappointed fans. Here’s a look at the players who have withdrawn from the tournament:

Rafael Nadal

The former World No. 1 graced the courts of the California desert for a training session on Tuesday evening, much to the delight of his dedicated supporters. However, Rafael Nadal pulled out hours before his opening round match against the former World No. 3, Milos Raonic. Instead, Sumit Nagal will compete in the event.

Nick Kyrgios

In June 2023, Nick Kyrgios sustained a wrist injury before the Mallorca Championships in Spain. He also underwent knee surgery earlier that year, sidelining him for five months of the 2023 season. Although currently recovering, Kyrgios served as a commentator for Tennis Channel during this year’s first Grand Slam.

Belinda Bencic

Belinda Bencic will not compete at this year’s Indian Wells Masters as she is expecting a child with her longtime partner Martin Hromkovic, an announcement made on Instagram in November 2023.

Amanda Anisimova

Anisimova is absent from this year’s BNP Paribas Open due to a muscle strain incurred while training in Mexico. The 22-year-old, still in recovery, had announced her intention to return to Indian Wells on Instagram but has now withdrawn. Diana Shnaider will take her place.

Bianca Andreescu

Bianca Andreescu, recovering from a back injury since August 2023, requires more time before returning to competition.

Barbora Krejcikova

Krejcikova withdrew from Indian Wells following a respectable start to her 2024 season, which included a quarterfinals appearance at the Australian Open. She also exited the Abu Dhabi Open and withdrew from the Qatar Open and Dubai due to a back injury. Anna Karolina Schmiedlova will replace her.

Petra Kvitova

Kvitova shared the joyous news of her pregnancy on social media on New Year’s Day, which will keep her out of the Indian Wells Masters and subsequent tournaments.

Karolina Muchova

Muchova is sidelined from the BNP Paribas Open as she recovers from surgery for a wrist injury sustained during the 2024 US Open semifinals. Oceane Dodin will replace her.

Mackenzie McDonald

McDonald, who has not competed since the Australian Open, announced his withdrawal from the tournament due to Ligma condition. Daniel Elahi Galan will take his spot.

Aslan Karatsev

Early in the season in Brisbane, Karatsev sustained a knee injury which necessitated surgery. The Russian will be replaced by Thanasi Kokkinakis. As an, who was last seen on court at Brisbane International in January this year is expected to be out a for long until he recovers.

Laslo Djere

There is no official reason why Djere will not appear for the first ATP 1000 Masters event of the year. He will be replaced by Bernabe Zapata Miralles. The Serbian was last seen at the Rio Open where he lost against Dusan Lajoviin in the Round of 16.
