WTA Qatar Open 2024 is first of ten WTA 1000 events in 2024

The WTA Qatar Open 2024, the first of the ten WTA 1000 events in 2024, will take place from February 19 to 25 at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar. Two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek will aim for a hat-trick of titles, while Coco Gauff will partner with a new partner after Jessica Pegula withdrew due to a neck injury. Gauff and Pegula had won the doubles title for two consecutive years. Jelena Ostapenko and Lyudmyla Kichenok, the runners-up in 2023, will also return to challenge for the trophy.

The tournament will be played on the fast and hard outdoor courts of the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex, a state-of-the-art facility that can accommodate up to 7,000 spectators.

Fresh from their showdown at the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open, Elena Rybakina and Daria Kasatkina will arrive in Doha with contrasting fortunes. Rybakina, the world No. 4, breezed past Kasatkina in straight sets in just 68 minutes to claim her third title of the year. She will enjoy a first-round bye, while Kasatkina will have to face a tough opponent in Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who reached the semifinals in Abu Dhabi.

World No. 2 and 2020 champion Aryna Sabalenka will be a notable absentee from the singles draw, as she opted to skip the event to focus on her preparation for the Indian Wells Masters. However, the field will still feature some former champions and top-ranked players, such as Victoria Azarenka, who won the title in 2012 and 2013, Garbiñe Muguruza, who triumphed in 2018, and Simona Halep, who is currently ranked No. 3 in the world. A total of 64 players will compete for the singles trophy, while 32 pairs will vie for the doubles trophy.
