Top 10 players who retired from professional tennis in 2024 ft. Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem

The ATP, WTA Tours will see multiple players ending their career this season.
The year 2024 has been full of twists, turns, surprises and upsets. The Paris Olympics added more thrill to the calendar, as Novak Djokovic won the accolade he had been waiting for two decades.
However, multiple tennis players also said their final goodbye to the sport and retired from professional tennis. Thus, with that being said, let’s take a look at the top 10 tennis players who retired from professional tennis in 2024:

10. Shelby Rogers
Shelby Rogers played her last singles match against countrywoman Jessica Pegula at Flushing Meadows. Aged 31, she retired from professional tennis, ending her 14-year-long career.
She reached the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros and the US Open once each. Her career-best ranking was 30, which she reached on August 8, 2022.
9. Steve Johnson
Former American tennis star and 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist Steve Johnson retired from the sport in March. He won four singles and two doubles titles on the tour.
Johnson was also ranked 21 in singles in July 2016. In the same year, he partnered Jack Sock to the third place finish at the Olympics.
8. Alison Van Uytvanck
Belgian player Alison Van Uytvanck called it a day from professional tennis in August. Her best finish at a Grand Slam came in 2015 when she reached the quarter-finals on the Parisian clay.
She lost to Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in that match. However, Uytvanck reached her career-best ranking of 37 in August 2018, after she reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.
7. Ben McLachlan
Former Japanese tennis star Ben McLachlan retired from professional tennis in April 2024. He majorly played doubles and also represented New Zealand between 2012 and 2017. McLachlan reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2018 alongside Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff.
6. Alize Cornet
Former World No. #11 Alize Cornet also hung up her boots in 2024, after losing to Qinwen Zheng in the first round of Roland-Garros.
In her professional career, Cornet played four Olympics and won six singles titles on the tour. She reached her career-best ranking of 11 on February 16, 2009, which was a breakthrough year for Cornet.

5. Camila Giorgi
Former Wimbledon quarter-finalist Camila Giorgi also played her last match in 2024. The former Italian tennis star played her last professional match against Iga Swiatek of Poland in the second round at the Miami Open. Giorgi won a total of four singles titles in her playing career and her career-best ranking was 26.
4. Garbine Muguruza
Two-time Grand Slam champion, Garbine Muguruza retired from tennis, earlier this year. The WTA World No. #1 Iga Swiatek came forward to laud the former Spanish tennis star after she announced her retirement. After winning the 2017 Wimbledon, Muguruza also reached the top spot in the rankings.
However, her injuries and inconsistencies on the court cut her career short. In January 2023, she took a hiatus from tennis after losing in the first round at the Australian Open. Muguruza formally announced her retirement from tennis on 20 April 2024 at the age of 30, ending a 12-year career.

3. Dominic Thiem

Once seen as one of the biggest prospects in tennis, Austria’s Dominic Thiem hung up his boots, aged 30. The former US Open champion retired at his home tournament the Vienna Open this season. He suffered a wrist injury during the 2021 Mallorca Championships, which eventually became career threatening.
Two-time French Open runner-up Thiem was facilitated at Stade Roland Garros. Meanwhile, he received a wildcard at the 2024 US Open.
2. Andy Murray

Three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray retired from tennis after playing at the 2024 Paris Olympics alongside countryman Daniel Evans. The Wimbledon Championships also organized a heartwarming farewell ceremony for Murray on Centre Court, where the likes of Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek and more were present.
He’s the first male tennis player to defend the gold medal at the singles event at the Olympics. Moreover, along with Stan Wawrinka, he’s also the only tennis star to win multiple Grand Slam titles during the peak “Big Three” era. Murray was also the ATP World No. #1 for a total of 41 weeks.
1. Rafael Nadal

Twenty-two-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal announced his retirement from the sport this season. The Davis Cup Finals 2024 in November was his farewell event. The 38-year-old featured at the Six Kings Slam and lost both his matches. Nadal has only played 19 matches on the ATP Tour this season and reached the finals in Bastad.
The 14-time French Open champion has been affected by multiple injuries and decided that it was time to bring down the curtain in 2024.
