Medvedev and De Minaur have lost their opening matches.

The inclusion of Alex de Minaur in ATP Finals 2024 has ended the 20-year absence of an Australian in the elite competition. The last Australian to qualify for the prestigious season final was Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.

De Minaur, 25, will face off against Daniil Medvedev for the second time this season, five months after their previous meeting in the French Open. Medvedev fell to the Australian on that occasion, losing in four sets after squandering an opening set lead.

Medevdev’s run-up to the ATP Finals has not been what he had hoped for. The Russian failed to defend the titles he won in 2023, the ATP Masters 1000 events in Miami and Rome. The World No. #4 has made just one semi-final appearance since his loss to Carlos Alcaraz in the last four at Wimbledon. Medvedev made the semi-final of the China Open, losing once again to Alcaraz.

Alex de Minaur fought his way to his maiden ATP Finals qualification on the back of two ATP Tour wins in the Netherlands and Mexico. Since reaching the last eight in SW19, De Minaur has reached at least the quarter-final stage of four subsequent events in New York, Antwerp, Vienna and Paris. Deep runs at the stated events helped the Aussie seal the deal.

The Australian secured a top 10 spot for the first time when he climbed to a high of No. #6 in the ATP Rankings in 2024. De Minaur went past the milestone on making the quarterfinals in Wimbledon.

Preview

Alex de Minaur may trail Daniil Medvedev in their career head-to-head (6-3), but there is no denying the fact that the Australian has enjoyed a more productive 2024 season. De Minaur (47-16) is marginally ahead of Medvedev (45-19), in the year-to-date win-loss record.

The Australian World No #9 has also added two titles to his resume, while the Russian has not won any title this year despite coming close on more than one occasion.

De Minaur denied Medvedev a chance to progress to the last eight at Roland Garros, with the Russian losing from an advantageous position in four sets. The head-to-head remains in the Russian’s favour at 6-3, even after the defeat.

Medvedev, the fourth seed in Turin, had to withdraw from Vienna with a bothersome right shoulder. De Minaur and Jannik Sinner stand in the way of the Russian’s bid to make a second consecutive semi-final at the year-ending event.

Match Prediction

Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur are in a must-win situation ahead of their scheduled clash on Tuesday, November 12. The two players head into their round-robin match in the Ilie Nastase Group after losing their opening matches.

Alex de Minaur is yet to post a win against Sinner after the straight set, 6-3, 6-4 loss in eight matches. Daniil Medvedev had a meltdown in his game against Taylor Fritz, smashing his racquet to oblivion during his 6-4, 6-3 loss to the American. Medvedev looks to be a far cry from the man who won the 2020 ATP Finals title and needs a radical turnaround if he is to progress.

Following a string of four losses to Medvedev, the Sydneysider pulled the rug out from under the Russian’s feet when he overcame the World No. #4 at the Paris and Canada Masters earlier this year. The wins in question came in their fifth and sixth tour-level meetings. De Minaur is 3-2 in their last five meetings, a confidence booster ahead of their first meeting in the ATP Finals.

Expect Alex de Minaur to hold his game together against the temperamental Russian and post his first win at the ATP Finals.

Result: Alex de Minaur to take the win in three sets.
