Zverev is one win away from reaching the title match for the third time at ATP Finals.

Alexander Zverev is stepping into the semi-final stage after three perfect wins without dropping a set at ATP Finals 2024. The two-time champion overcame Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4, in his final group match to confirm a place in the last four with a third final appearance only a match away.

Any slender hopes Alcaraz had of making a second successive semi-final were dashed when Casper Ruud defeated Andrey Rublev in their round-robin encounter.

Taylor Fritz confirmed his place and is joining Zverev as the other semi-finalist following a three-set win over Alex de Minaur on Thursday. Fritz came back from one set down to get the better of De Minaur, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, for his 51st win of the season.

Zverev and Fritz have been among the busiest players on tour this season. The upcoming semi-final clash on Saturday evening between the two will be Zverev’s 90th and Fritz’s 74th. The forthcoming showdown will also be the fifth meeting of the season.

Preview

Zverev topped the John Newcombe group after three convincing wins to remain undefeated as he heads into the semifinals. It will be the German’s fourth semi-final—only Novak Djokovic (5) has more appearances in the last four stage than Zverev. The World No. #2 earned his 69th win of the season by defeating Alcaraz. A win over Fritz will see Zverev join Andy Murray with most wins in a single season since the Scotsman notched up 78 wins in 2016.

Fritz registered his ninth top 10 win in 2024 to make his second semi-final in Turin. The American made the last four two years ago, where he lost to Djokovic. Running into an inspired Jannik Sinner for the second time in the season and the straight-set loss that followed denied the US Open finalist a chance to finish the group stage undefeated.

Zverev will be itching for payback after losing the last three meetings to Taylor Fritz. Losses to Fritz at Wimbledon and the US Open preceeded the defeat at the Laver Cup. The 27-year-old German’s sole win this season came in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters.

The 27-year-old, winner of the ATP Masters 1000s in Rome and Paris this year, matched the Spaniard’s game to go ahead 6-5 in their head-to-head series. Zverev will be having an eye on his third final since 2018. The German has a 2-0 record in finals at the year-ending event.

Fritz quelled the challenge from Australian debutant Alex de Minaur to move one step closer to becoming the first American finalist at the season finale since James Blake in 2006. The last American to win the title was Pete Sampras in 1999.

Match Prediction

Zverev has a chance to even the score when he takes on Fritz in the semi-final in the evening session on Saturday. The German enters the contest after affirming the World No. #2 position for his first top-three year-end finish since 2021.

The 27-year-old proved he was worthy of the No. #2 spot by overcoming Carlos Alcaraz, the man who defeated him in the title round at the 2024 French Open. Fritz came through in a potential do-or-die match with a display of sublime shot making to find himself on the verge of a first final at the season finale.

Fritz’s aspirations will not stop at becoming the World No. #5 in 2024 following a short stint early last season. The American will have the trophy in his crosshairs, but it won’t be easy going up against another hard-court specialist in the form of Alexander Zverev. The German is thriving, having won the Paris Masters before arriving in Turin and a 3-0 clean slate in the group stage.

Zverev will have to be wary of Fritz after being beaten three of the four times they have played this year. While Fritz has the game to take on Fritz from the baseline, the German’s attacking serve and shot selection has been on point in the past week and will not allow Fritz to settle into any sort of rhythm.

Result: Alexander Zverev to take the win in two sets.
