Aryna Sabalenka overtakes Maria Sharapova in unusual record after semi-final loss at Wimbledon 2025

Aryna Sabalenka has overtaken Maria Sharapova for the loudest grunt at Wimbledon.
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka lost to Amanda Anisimova in the semi-finals of Wimbledon 2025. The Belarusian made a contest of it when she rallied to take the second set after losing the first. The top-seed crashed out 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 in two hours and 37 minutes to make a semi-final exit for the third straight time at SW19.
Aryna Sabalenka missed out on her third Grand Slam final of the season. The World No. 1 made it to the title rounds at the Australian Open and Roland Garros. She was beaten in Melbourne by Madison Keys (3 – 6, 6 – 2, 5 – 7) and at Roland Garros by Coco Gauff (7-6(5), 2-6, 4-6).
Yet Sabalenka has had a better season than World No. 8 Iga Swiatek, who is without a tour-level title since defending her crown at Roland Garros last season. The World No. 1 in the WTA Rankings has a tour-leading haul of 47 match wins this season.

Sabalenka’s signature grunt stood out in her effort to make the finals. Victoria Aazarenka, the two-time Australian Open champ, hit 104 decibels at SW19. Venus Williams recorded 99 decibels on the grunt-o-meter at the venue. Her sister Serena Williams was also not far behind, achieving the highest sound level of 89 decibels in her career. The scream queen of the 1990s, Monica Seles, who pulverised her opponents with her two-handed forehand and backhand, reached a peak of 93 decibels on Centre Court. Martina Navratilova took exception to Seles’ grunting in their Wimbledon 1992 semi-final match, drawing the umpire’s attention to it.
