The World No. 1 survived a hard-fought battle against home favourite Emma Raducanu.

Aryna Sabalenka showcased her clutch genes on centre court, in her third round clash against local hope Emma Raducanu. Despite being put under the pressure on multiple occasions, the World No. 1 fought her way back into the contest time and again. With the crowd completely behind the Brit, Sabalenka had to maintain her composure and she did so, in stunning fashion.

In the opening set, the Belarusian had plenty of opportunities to break, but she was unable to convert them, including a 13-minute game on Raducanu’s serve. The top seed was a set point down in the tiebreak, but played a couple of artistic forehands using the angle, to steal the opening set from Emma Raducanu.

However, the 22-year-old Brit found a headstart in the second set, and the crowd was louder than ever, with Raducanu leading 4 games to 1. However, what followed was unprecedented, as the top seed came back from 1-4, to win five games on the trot, ultimately triumphing 6-4, and sending Raducanu packing, much to the disappointment of the home crowd.

Preview

Aryna Sabalenka will be aware of the path that lies ahead for her. When she began her campaign, her projected route appeared daunting, but the recent spike in upsets, have eased her route. She will be further buoyed by her latest victories and is set to meet Elise Mertens for a quarter-final berth.

The Belgium knocked out 14th seed Elina Svitolina, avenging her Nottingham Open defeat which took place just a few days back. Mertens had won the Libema Open and is one of the very few WTA players alive at Wimbledon 2025, to have won a pre-event on grass.

However, Sabalenka will enter this clash with a major psychological advantage, due to her staggering record over Mertens. The 27-year-old is currently on a nine-match winning streak against the World No. 24, with their most recent exchange taking place in Madrid this year, which Sabalenka won in straight sets. The winner of their only duel on grass was Sabalenka too, back in 2018 at Eastbourne.
