Jannik Sinner will return as the Australian Open defending champion.
The ATP calendar has been unveiled and is customary, begins with the Australian Open in Melbourne. A new defending champion will arrive in Melbourne as Jannik Sinner for the first time in a decade. The last occasion on which this happened was in 2014 when Stan Wawrinka overcame Rafael Nadal for his first Grand Slam trophy. The Swiss veteran defeated Nadal in four sets, 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
The 2024 season has belonged to a list of next generation stars. Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz split the Grand Slams equally between them, leaving little room for tour veterans to make a mark. While the veterans will look to make a comeback in 2025, needless to say, there has been a generational shift in men’s tennis.
Further, other young players to bring the spotlight on themselves include Alexei Popyrin, Dino Prizmic, Jakub Mensik, Joao Fonseca, Arthur Fils and Ben Shelton. The likes of Hamad Medjedovic, Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Jack Draper also deserve mention among the rising stars of men’s tennis.
All these players have made significant strides in 2024, winning maiden titles and reaching new heights in the ATP rankings.
Novak Djokovic, now a senior on the tour, will try to regain lost ground. It will be interesting to see how the Serb fares in the 2025 season against the young guns of the ATP Tour.
The Masters 1000 events held in Canada and Cincinnati will extend to 12-day events in 2025. There will be three more tournaments in the ATP 500 calendar, up from 13 last season. Dallas, Doha and Munich host the upgraded entrants.
