Carlos Alcaraz has been suffering with cold in ATP Finals 2024.

Carlos Alcaraz made an inspiring comeback in the ATP Finals 2024. He defeated Andrey Rublev to record his first win of the event. After the win, Alcaraz opened up on his health conditions and how he has been struggling to bring out his best. His movement around the court had been restricted in the opening match against Casper Ruud.

Alcaraz admitted that his cold had played a major factor in his loss against Ruud but felt better in the second match against Rublev. He said,’I could be better. I’ve been struggling with my health for the last week. Today I thought I was going to feel better. I was ok enough to play. Today I really wanted to step on the court and just play good tennis and play at a high level.’

The Spaniard revealed that he could not bring out his best against Ruud due to his health. In the match against Rublev was seen wearing a nose strip in order to improve his breathing on the court. With a win, Alcaraz has managed to keep his semi-final hopes alive as he will next face Alexander Zverev.

Alcaraz has five wins against Zverev in 10 meetings. The pair will face on hardcourts for the seventh time with the German leading the head-to-head with four wins. It will also be their second meeting in the season ending championship as Zverev had won the group stage clash last season in three sets. This time Alcaraz will need to recover from his cold to win the battle.

The group stage contest between Alcaraz and Rublev of the John Newcombe group saw both players exchanging powerful groundstrokes. After an hour and 36 minutes, Alcaraz beat Rublev 6-3, 7-6 (8). It was the Russian’s second loss in their third meeting as he had lost last year too in the same event.

The World No #3 hit 10 aces and 33 winners against Rublev and showed better court coverage this time. The crowd witnessed Alcaraz slowly getting better in his game as he yet to showcase his peak form on the court. His serve speed also improved as his first serve average was 206 km/h while against Ruud it was 199 km/h.

Alcaraz will now hope for a full recovery before his match against Zverev as he needs a win to stand a chance to qualify for the semi-finals. He will have a day’s time to recover knowing Zverev will challenge his limits on the court.
