Several tennis championships are held throughout the year. Despite the significance of Grand Slams, there are other titles that are considered prestigious within the tennis community. One such championship is the ATP Monte Carlo Masters.

Founded in 1896, the Monte Carlo Masters has a rich history in tennis. It is the second oldest ATP 1000 Masters Championship and is played at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in France.

Initially known as the Monte-Carlo International, it is played on clay courts. The first winner of the championship was the UK’s George Whiteside Hillyard, with Germany’s Victor Voss as the runner-up.

In this article, we will take a look at the top five players with the most titles at the ATP Monte Carlo Masters in the men’s singles category.

Players with most men’s singles titles at Monte Carlo Masters

5. Björn Borg (3)

Sweden’s Björn Borg is at the fifth place in the list with three titles to his name. He achieved his first title at ATP MOnte Carlo Masters in the year 1977 by defeating Italy’s Corrado Barazzutti in 6-3, 7-5, 6-0 sets.

His second title came in the year 1979 by defeating Vitas Gerulaitis in 6–2, 6–1, 6–3 sets, while he achieved his third title by defeating Guilermo Vilas in the year 1980. In addition to Borg, Henri Cochet, Italy’s Nicola Pietrangeli, Romania’s Ilie Năstase, UK’s Gordon Lowe, and Austria’s Thomas Muster have each claimed the title three times in their careers.

4. Laurence Doherty (4)

The United Kingdom’s Laurence Doherty had the honor of holding the Monte Carlo Masters title four times in his career. His first title victory was in 1900. Interestingly, although his name has been listed as the winner for that particular year, there have been claims that the tournament was not held that year.

His second title win was in 1901, where he defeated the UK’s Wilberforce Eaves in sets of 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. He achieved the other two titles in 1905 and 1906.

Laurence Doherty’s elder brother, Reginald Doherty, has been the champion at the Monte Carlo Masters for six editions. His first title win was in the second edition of the tournament, in 1897, where he defeated the UK’s Conway W. Blackwood Price in sets of 6–2, 6–1, 6–2.
