Among the active players, Novak Djokovic holds the record for playing the highest number of ATP matches.

Being an athlete at the highest level demands the utmost fitness levels and dedication. Tennis being an extremely athletic sport requires players to maintain the highest fitness standards throughout their careers. There have been various players who have have enjoyed successful short stints on the ATP tour. But few of them have managed to win grand slams and break records for decades altogether.

Consistency over different surfaces for a long a period of time has been the ultimate test for the tennis players. Few players break records on one particular surface such as hard, clay or grass but the elite players manage to keep hold of their winning strategies on every type of court.

Apart from winning matches and titles, longevity is also one of the criteria for greatness. Let’s have a look at the top 5 male players who have played the most number of matches:

5. Rafael Nadal: 1307

Despite having an injury-prone career, Rafael Nadal has played 1307 tour-level matches and holds a remarkable 1080-227 win-loss record. Nadal made his professional debut in 2001 at the age of 14. The Spaniard has won 92 ATP singles titles including 22 Grand Slams.

His most recent title victory was his 14th French Open triumph in 2022. He has also been the ATP number 1 ranked player for 209 weeks. Nadal competed at the Paris Olympics 2024 where he featured in doubles along with the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz.

4. Ivan Lendl: 1310

The formidable Czech and eight-time Grand Slam singles champion Ivan Lendl was a major presence in world tennis in the 1980s. Lendl played from 1978 to 1994, has a record of 1068 victories to only 242 defeats from his 1314 ATP matches. He won 94 ATP titles and spent 270 weeks at the top of the world rankings.

3. Novak Djokovic: 1346

Novak Djokovic turned pro in 2003 and has won 99 ATP singles titles including a world record of 24 Major titles. He holds an overall win-loss record of 1124-222 and has been ranked the No. 1 player for a record total of 428 weeks in 13 different years.

This year started on the wrong note for Djokovic and when things seemed to improve he lost in straight sets in the final of Wimbledon. But the ever-hungry Serb came back and won the gold medal at Paris Olympics 2024.

2. Roger Federer: 1526

Roger Federer turned professional in the year 1998 and won an incredible 1251 matches out of his 1526 matches during a glittering 24-year career that ended in 2022.

The Swiss won 103 singles titles including 20 Majors, and also holds the men’s record of winning eight Wimbledon titles. Federer was ranked No. 1 player for 310 weeks, including a record 237 consecutive weeks, and he also finished as the year-end No. 1 five times.

1. Jimmy Connors: 1557

Former world No. 1 Jimmy Connors holds the record for the most ATP matches played with an outstanding win-loss record of 1274-283 in 1557 matches. The American won a record 109 ATP singles titles including eight Grand Slams (five US Opens, two Wimbledon titles, and one Australian Open). He was ranked the No. 1 player for a then-record 268 weeks in a career that started in 1972 and came to a close in 1996.
