Jannik Sinner cruised past De Minaur to become the first Italian to make the AO semis.
A comprehensive straight sets victory for Jannik Sinner over Alex de Minaur, confirms the final four for the Australian Open 2025. The Aussie’s dreams were shattered in the quarter-final match, with the Italian giving de Minaur no chance to get into the battle.
The final scoreline read 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, underscoring the top seed’s dominance in the encounter. The defending champion will now face Ben Shelton in the semi-finals, with a potential title clash awaiting against the winner of the Novak Djokovic vs Alexander Zverev clash.
Sinner entered this contest with questions lingering over his health and fitness, after he was found shaking and trembling in his last match against Holger Rune. The Dane provided serious resistance to the Italian, even claiming the second set. However, Rune failed to make use of the chances that came his way in the third set and the top seed seized the opportunity and clinched the match.
With the Italian set to make a second straight semi-final appearance at the Rod Laver Arena, Jannik Sinner becomes the youngest player to reach consecutive men’s singles semi-finals at the Australian Open since Rafael Nadal in 2008-09. The 23-year-old is also just the second male player in the Open era to move to a 6-0 record against opponents at their home Grand Slam event, after Djokovic.
With a formidable 20-4 record at the Australian Open, Sinner has now taken the equal-fewest matches to register 20 men’s singles victories in Melbourne since 2000, along with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. The other semi-finalist, Ben Shelton, is only one of the two left-handers to have played semi-finals of both hard-court Grand Slams since 1988.
Earlier, the 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic stunned Carlos Alcaraz to proceed to his 50th Grand Slam semi-final, the highest for any men’s singles player. The Serbian now sets his sights on reaching the Australian Open final for a record 12th time.
