Djokovic is vying for his 11th Australian Open title, while Alcaraz looks for his first.

Rod Laver Arena could possibly witness one of the most blockbuster quarterfinals in recent times, when Serb great Novak Djokovic takes on young Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz in the Men’s Singles Quarterfinal at the Australian Open 2025 on Tuesday.

Djokovic, the most successful men’s singles player at Melbourne Park, has overcome his bad form before the tournament and a slow start, to secure too back-to-back straight sets victory. Alcaraz too didn’t really find much success towards the end of last year but has well and truly found his rhythm.

A match such as this doesn’t deserve to be so early in the tournament. However, the Serb is seeded seventh which has reflected in the draws. And so, we look forward to, what could be a match for ages to remember, in a tournament which has already given us many such memories.

Match details

  • Tournament: Australian Open 2025
  • Round: Quarter-final
  • Date: January 21
  • Venue: Rod Laver Arena, Melbourne, Australia
  • Surface: Hard Court

Preview

Novak Djokovic, who ended 2024 without a Major title for the first time since 2011, had the worst possible start at Melbourne Park, losing the first set to American teen Nishesh Basavareddy. However, he eventually managed to showcase his class, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2. He then dropped another set against Portuguese Jaime Faria, clinching the fixture 6-1, 6-7, 6-3, 6-2.

However, the seventh seed Serb, who has a certain Andy Murray sitting in his box, managed to win the next round in straight sets, coincidentally against two Czech players. He defeated Tomas Machac 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, before defeating Jiri Lehecka 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 on Sunday. While the 37-year-old is still not back to his best, he is still well in contention to win his 11th Australian Open crown and a record 25th Grand Slam overall.

Four-time Grand Slam winner Carlos Alcaraz is looking to complete his Career Grand Slam this week and become the youngest to do so at the age of 21. Despite having his fair share of illnesses and ordinary form in the lead-up to the tournament, he has played as per the lofty standards set by him, in the first four rounds. In the first round, the third seed drubbed Kazakh Alexander Shevchenko 6-1, 7-5, 6-1. An even more dominant performance followed in the second round against Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka, as he won 6-0, 6-1, 6-4.

The Spaniard, who clinched the French Open and the Wimbledon last year, dropped his first set in the next match against Nuno Borges but eventually secured a 6-2, 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-2 victory. The fourth round could have been a potentially tricky clash, against Brit Jack Draper, an upcoming talent. Alcaraz eventually won the first two sets (7-5, 6-1), before Draper eventually conceded defeat by virtue of an injury.

Match Prediction

This will be a fixture between two complete players, who are capable of wreaking havoc on any kind of court. Djokovic has one of the greatest backhands of all-time. An aggressive baseline player, his groundstrokes have troubled opponents for nearly two decades. More importantly, his age and recent injuries have not impeded his flexibility and athleticism.

On the other hand, not many players can hit the ball as devastatingly as Alcaraz with his forehand. Djokovic himself had once said that the Spaniard has the best qualities of the Big Three. What makes him stand out is his range of shots- from volleys to passing shots to drop shots.

The two players come into this match on a level footing, as far as recent form is concerned. This is a match which could go all the way. The Serb has been a master of emerging victorious in such scenarios, even in recent times. However, the Spaniard might be a tad bit fresher come into fixture. The veteran’s body could heavily be tested, which might potentially mean the youngster triumphs at the end.

Result: Alcaraz to win in five sets.
