Billie Jean King Cup 2024 Finals: Poland vs Spain tie postponed due to severe weather conditions

Japan vs Romania will now be the first tie of Billie Jean King Cup 2024 Finals.

The Billie Jean King Cup 2024 Finals has gotten off on the wrong foot as the opening battle between Spain and Poland has been postponed. The officials of the event had to shift the match due to severe weather conditions. With the change being confirmed, the first tie will be on November 14 between Romania and Japan.

The encounter between Spain and Poland will now take place on November 15. The rest of the ties will go on as planned as there are no further changes yet in the schedule. Fans will now be able to witness two ties each day from November 14 till 17. Defending champions Canada will be in action on November 17 during the quarter-finals.

Fans were eager to watch the clash of Spain and Poland as the top stars geared up to clash against each other. Poland is led by Iga Swiatek as Spain will see Paula Badosa in the front. The singles encounter would have offered the fans the perfect start to the 61st edition of the event.

But now with the changes being made, Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima and Ena Shibahara will aim to bring out their best on the hard indoor courts of Martin Carpena Arena in Malaga, Spain. They will be up against Romania’s Jaqueline Adina Cristian and Anca Alexia Todoni in the singles battle.

The format will be the best of three, two singles and one doubles matches. Romania will depend upon Elena Gabriela Ruse in the doubles department while the pair of Shuko Aoyama/ Eri Hozumi will aim to continue their brilliant form for Japan. With only a day to go, the players will be seeking to win the biggest women’s team title in the sport for their respective nations.

The next tie of the opening day will also feature the battle between USA and Slovakia. The 18-time champion will see Danielle Collins lead the singles battle while Taylor Townsend will be geared for a doubles tie. Meanwhile, Slovakia who won the title in 2002 will see Rebecca Sramkova carrying the hopes for the team in singles. She had won her first WTA tour title this season by capturing the Thailand Open in September.
