Carlos Alcaraz is set to pair with Emma Raducanu in the mixed doubles event.
The US Open mixed doubles championship is facing fresh uncertainty and chaos as top stars pull out or remain undecided about their participation in the revamped event. After Jannik Sinner’s partner Emma Navarro withdrew, leaving him scrambling for a replacement, now Carlos Alcaraz’s entry is also in doubt.
The newly formatted mixed doubles will take place on August 19–20, just a day after the Cincinnati Open final, where fans will witness yet another Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz title clash.
But scheduling is a major concern. The Cincinnati Masters final is slated for Monday, August 18, at 3 p.m. EDT (9 p.m. CEST), and given the history of marathon battles between the Italian and Spaniard, the match is almost certain to stretch long into the night.
That leaves barely 24 hours before the start of the mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows.
For Alcaraz, he is paired with British star Emma Raducanu, while Sinner’s situation is even more uncertain as Navarro’s withdrawal has forced him to hunt for a new partner. If he cannot find a suitable replacement quickly, Sinner may also be forced to withdraw.
Fatigue is the second big factor. Jumping from a grueling ATP Masters 1000 final to a Grand Slam doubles match the very next day raises serious questions about player readiness and health.
The problem isn’t unique to Sinner and Alcaraz. Iga Swiatek, who is set to play Jasmine Polini in the Cincinnati final on Monday night, is also scheduled to team up with Casper Ruud for mixed doubles at the US Open, meaning she too faces the same dilemma of insufficient rest.

Adding to the controversy, the event is already under fire for featuring mostly high-profile singles players, sidelining regular mixed doubles specialists.
The US Open singles main draw begins August 25, giving players only four days to recover from mixed doubles before chasing the season’s final Grand Slam. With exhaustion and scheduling conflicts looming, fans may well see more withdrawals before action takes place in New York.
