Alcaraz has reached the round of 16 for a fourth consecutive time at Wimbledon.

Carlos Alcaraz eased past Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Centre Court on Friday to make the fourth round. With the win, Alcaraz extended his win streak at the All England Club to 17. A brief hiccup slowed the second seed down. Struff broke the Spaniard’s serve in the eighth game of the second set and went on to win the set.

The Spaniard was kept on court for longer than he expected after the German stretched Alcaraz to four sets. But the second seed prevailed over Struff in two hours, 25 minutes and extended a career-best winning streak to 21 matches. Alcaraz is making his fourth consecutive round of 16 appearance at the venue.

His opponent Andrey Rublev posted a comfortable 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 win over French qualifier Adrian Mannarino in two hours to set up the fourth-round clash with Alcaraz. Rublev’s quarter-final run in 2023 was his best result at the venue. The 14th-seed Russian will have an opportunity to replicate the result when he takes on Alcaraz in their fourth head-to-head meeting on Sunday.

Preview

Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, remains on track to become just the fifth man in the Open Era to win three or more consecutive titles at Wimbledon. Every win at SW19 this season also brings the Spaniard closer to joining Bjorn Borg as the second man in ATP history to claim the Roland Garros-Wimbledon double in consecutive years

Last month, the World No. 2 fought back from the brink by saving three championship points in a dramatic five-set win over Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros.

A brief dip in rhythm saw Alcaraz lose the second set to Struff, but he powered back in the third set when he won 89% of his first serve points. Sets three and four accounted for 22 of the 38 winners struck by Alcaraz during the match duration.

Andrey Rublev’s decision to sign up Marat Safin as coach appears to be paying dividends as the Moscow native is now one match win away from matching his best result at SW19. Rublev made the finals of the Hamburg Open in May, his first since Safin came on board as his coach in April.

The 27-year-old Rublev came back from a set down to defeat unseeded South African Lloyd Harris 6-7(1), 6-4, 7-6(3), 6-3 for the third time in a row.

Match prediction

Carlos Alcaraz has kept his composure to rein in Jan-Lennard Struff and record a 45th tour-level win. The Spaniard remains undefeated since May, winning three titles on the trot – Rome, Roland Garros and Queen’s.

Andrey Rublev is back in the top 10 in the ATP Live Rankings, coming in at No. 9. He exited the list back in May following a second-round exit in Rome. Rublev served up 14 aces en route to his win over Mannarino, complemented by 33 winners.

It’s an improvement from last season when he exited in the opening round. The Russian has won his previous five matches on grass, including his two wins at The Boodles exhibition at Stoke Park.

Alcaraz has had plenty of close calls this season, including his five-set marathon victory over Italian Fabio Fognini. The Spaniard is a remarkable 14-1 in five-set matches. The World No. 2 has displayed moments of weakness that allow his rivals back into the game. However, Alcaraz is unlikely to let slip an opportunity to make history.

Result: Carlos Alcaraz to win in four sets.
