Carlos Alcaraz won the title at Queen’s Club in 2023.

Jiri Lehecka returned a solid performance against Jack Draper to secure his maiden title round appearance at the Queen’s Club Championships on Saturday. Lehecka denied Draper a chance to play in front of his home crowd in Sunday’s final when he defeated the left-hander, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in two hours and seven minutes.

Lehecka quickly took control, breaking the Draper serve in the opening game of the first set and struck 36 winners to march into the final.

The Czech had defeated another Englishman, Jacob Fearnley, in the last eight for his 100th tour-level victory. After the win over Draper, Lehecka is 2-2 in head-to-head against the southpaw from Sutton. The crucial break of serve earned by Lehecka in the eleventh game of the decider was a deciding factor in his triumph.

The 23-year-old Draper was a quarter-finalist last season at the venue following the win over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The semi-final loss to Lehecka also prevented any chance of a re-match with Alcaraz.

Lehecka moves ahead into the title round against Alcaraz, who extended his winning streak to 17 matches on Saturday when he defeated fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut in the semi-finals. Alcaraz, the top seed, will now play his second final in three years at the venue.

Alcaraz has played against two lucky losers this week, defeating both in straight sets. The World No. #2 overcame Adam Walton (6-4, 7-5(4) in the first round and Arthur Rinderknech (7-5, 6-4) in the third. However, he was tested in his second-round match against compatriot Jaume Munar before he rallied to win 6-4, 6-7(7), 7-5.

The 22-year-old Alcaraz had an easier outing against 37-year-old ATP Tour veteran and compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut. The top seed delivered the win, 6-4, 6-4, to win his third straight match against Agut and move to 3-0 in their head-to-head. The five-time Grand Slam champion fired 15 aces and 36 winners to complete the win in 90 minutes.

Preview

It was a momentous occasion for Jiri Lehecka who booked his first grass-court final at the Queen’s Club ATP 500 event by showing British No. #1 Jack Draper the door in the semi-final stage. The unseeded Czech quelled a vocal British crowd and Draper’s inspired fight back after losing his first set of the week. A title run will edge Lehecka closer to a top 20 debut in the ATP Rankings.

The 23-year-old Draper was a quarter-finalist last season at the venue following the win over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The semi-final loss to Lehecka also prevented any chance of a re-match with Alcaraz.

Lehecka became only the second Czech man to reach a grass court final in the Open Era. The first Czech player was Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon in 2010. The World No. #30 is guaranteed to rise five places to No. #25 thanks to reaching his first final at the Queen’s Club.

Alcaraz will look to join Feliciano Lopez as the second Spaniard to have won twice at the venue. Lopez won the title in 2017 and 2019. He could also become just the third Spaniard to win the Queen’s Club trophy in the history of the tournament. Alcaraz’s illustrious countryman, Rafael Nadal, was the first Spaniard to do so when he won the title in 2008.

Match prediction

Instead of the two top seeds, we have unseeded Czech Jiri Lehecka taking on the top seed and 2023 champion Carlos Alcaraz in the finals. If the Czech prevails on Sunday, he will become the first unseeded player since Feliciano Lopez made a title run in 2019 as a wildcard.

On Sunday, Lehecka will play the biggest final of his career against Carlos Alcaraz. His four previous title-round appearances have come at the ATP 250 level. At stake for the Czech is his second title of the season following the Brisbane International in January and his third overall.

Lehecka and Alcaraz are evenly poised in the rivalry having a win each in their head-to-head. Lehecka defeated Alcaraz in Doha earlier this year in three sets.

Their upcoming face-off will be their first at a tour-level final and their second meeting on grass. Undoubtedly, Alcaraz will have the edge over Lehecka armed with a 28-3 record on grass. The Spaniard had defeated Lehecka at the Queen’s Club Championships in 2023 in the round of 16.

Result: Alcaraz to win in three sets.
