Coco Gauff's projected path to Cincinnati Open 2025 final

Coco Gauff won the Cincinnati Open title in 2023.

Former Cincinnati Open champion Coco Gauff will start her campaign in Mason, Ohio, with the hope of regaining dominance and forgetting last year’s early exit. She won the title in 2023 and was eliminated in the second-round last year during her title defence campaign.

Gauff hasn’t been in top form since winning the 2025 French Open. After losing in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships, she was defeated by Canada’s Victoria Mboko in the Canadian Open.

Nevertheless, with positive hopes of the title, let’s take a look at Coco Gauff’s projected path to the Cincinnati Open 2025 final.

Coco Gauff’s projected path at Cincinnati Open 2025

First Round: Bye

Seeded second in the Cincinnati Masters, Coco Gauff has earned a bye in the first round of the tournament.

Second Round: Wang Xinyu or Emiliana Arango

In the second round, the American tennis star will face the winner of the opening round fixture between China’s Wang Xinyu and Colombia’s Emiliana Arango. Xinyu recently reached the semi-finals in Prague last month before missing the Canadian Open.

Meanwhile, Arango suffered a first-round defeat in Canada, losing to Eugenie Bouchard. Gauff is expected to record a comfortable win in the second round, unlike last year, when she came up short against Yulia Putintseva.

Third Round: Dayana Yastremska (32) or Ann Li

Seeded 32nd in Cincinnati, Dayana Yastremska is expected to lock horns against Coco Gauff in the third round. However, before reaching the third round, Yastremska would have to beat the winner of the second-round clash between Ann Li and Viktoriya Tomova.

Nevertheless, Yastremska defeated the reigning French Open champion in the opening round of Wimbledon earlier this year. Li has reached the top ranking of 44 in the WTA tour, while Tomova has earned a spot in the main draw via qualifiers. Meanwhile, Gauff has faced Dayana Yastremska four times on the tour, winning thrice.

Fourth Round: Jelena Ostapenko (23) or Daria Kasatkina (15)

Jelena Ostapenko and Coco Gauff have faced each other only three times on the tour, and the latter has won twice. However, the Latvian tennis star is not new to upsets. She knows how to push the opponent to the limit and win major matches.

Meanwhile, Gauff is winless against Daria Kasatkina in their three meetings, the last of which took place in 2022 at the WTA Finals.

Quarter-finals: Elina Svitolina (10) or Jasmine Paolini (7)

Elina Svitolina suffered from hatred from bettors following her loss in the Canadian Open quarter-final against Naomi Osaka. However, it’s expected that she will not let the negativity bother her in Cincinnati, as she will march forward with her aggressive playing style.

Jasmine Paolini is the other star who can challenge Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals. The two-time Grand Slam champion has defeated Paolini (4 matches total) and Svitolina (3 matches total) twice on the tour.

Semifinals: Jessica Pegula (4) or Emma Navarro (8)

Coco Gauff is likely to face a compatriot in the semi-finals of the 2025 Cincinnati Open. Jessica Pegula finished as a runner-up last season in Cincinnati, while Emma Navarro was eliminated in the first round.

However, following her first-round exit at Wimbledon, Pegula has struggled to regain momentum on the North American swing.

Navarro’s case is also similar; however, she managed to reach the second week at SW19. With points on the line, the stars will have to provide their best performance to win and rise in the ranks. Hence, a heated all-American semi-final is likely to take place in Cincinnati in the coming weeks.

Final: Iga Swiatek (3) or Aryna Sabalenka (1)

In the summit clash, the American tennis star can go head-to-head against multiple-time Grand Slam champions Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka. Swiatek reached the semi-finals in Cincinnati last year, while Sabalenka is the defending champion.

Coco Gauff stunned Sabalenka to win the French Open earlier this year but was later eliminated in the first round of the Wimbledon Championships. Gauff has defeated Sabalenka six times in their 11 meetings, while she has got the better of Swiatek only four times in 15 meetings.

Madison Keys can also emerge as a potential threat for the two-time Grand Slam champion.
