Rune and Griekspoor will cross paths in a Masters event for the second time.

Holger Rune saved five of the six break points he faced to equal his 2024 run at the Indian Wells Open. Stefanos Tsitsipas arrived in California shortly after his maiden ATP 500 win in Dubai and was on a seven-match win streak, including victories in the first two rounds in Indian Wells.

However, the Greek World No. #9 was unable to find a way past Rune as the Dane posted a 6-4, 6-4 win in 78 minutes. Rune now leads Tsitsipas 4-0 in their head-to-head. The 21-year-old Rune pulled off an audacious shot in the eighth game of the second set when trailing 15-40 and down two breakpoints – a tweener lob to claim the point. The World No. #13 went on to serve out the game and take the win two games later after a 44-minute second set.

Up next for Rune is the last-eight match against unseeded Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor. The World No. #48 from the Netherlands had knocked out Japanese qualifier Yosuke Watanuki, 7-6(4), 6-1 in the fourth round. Griekspoor had accounted for top seed Alexander Zverev in the second round for his first top-10 win of the season. 

Watanuki had a dream run in his main draw debut at Indian Wells Open 2025, getting the better of No. #19 seed Tomas Machac and No. #16 seed Frances Tiafoe in back-to-back matches to set up the clash with Griekspoor.

Holger Rune and Tallon Griekspoor are all set to battle it out for a spot in the last four in Indian Wells. Their upcoming face-off on Thursday is their second at a Masters-level event after their third-round meeting in Madrid last season. The 12th seed Rune trails Griekspoor 2-0 as he heads into Thursday’s quarter-final.

Preview

Griekspoor and Rune were the first quarterfinalists on a rain-delayed day in Indian Wells. Rune heads into his second successive quarter-final appearance at the venue and ninth overall at ATP 1000 events. The man joining him—Tallon Griekspoor is through to his first quarter-final at a Masters event.

With the tournament now in its second week, either Rune or Griekspoor are seeded to meet the two-time finalist Daniil Medvedev in the last four. Medvedev was quick to start but allowed Tommy Paul into the mix when the American won four straight games to draw level at 4-4 in the first set. The Russian claimed the opening set with a break of serve in the tenth game.

The second set went in Medvedev’s favour, with the fifth-seed breaking Paul’s serve in the second, fourth and sixth games. The 6-4, 6-0 loss for a second straight year denied the American a spot in the last eight on home turf.
