Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz return to Indian Wells Open 2025 with sights on retaining their crown.

The 2025 tennis season moves to Indian Wells, where the first of the nine 1000-level events will get underway. It is the first combined ATP Masters and WTA 1000 event of the year.

Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz are the reigning champions and have won the Indian Wells Open twice. Swiatek will be looking to become the first woman to win three titles at the venue, while Alcaraz will look to complete a rare three-peat. Only Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have achieved the feat at Tennis Paradise.

The-21-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, who lifted the trophy in Indian Wells at age 19 in 2023, is spending his 150th week in the ATP Top 10. He is the youngest man since Rafael Nadal to reach the milestone since making his top-10 debut in April 2022 at 18.

Top seed Alexander Zverev will look to return to the winner’s circle for the first time since lifting the Paris Masters trophy last November. Zverev remains on the hunt for a first title in 2025. A lacklustre South American debut left the German at 4-3 across events in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Acapulco.

The local talent is also making a beeline for their home event. There are three American women in the WTA Top 5 scheduled to play at Indian Wells Open—Coco Gauff (3), 2024 US Open finalist Jessica Pegula (4), and 2025 Australian Open Champion Madison Keys (5). Pegula is fresh off winning the ATX Open in Austin.

Joining the American women from the WTA will be Taylor Fritz (4), Tommy Paul (11), Ben Shelton (12), and Frances Tiafoe (17)—all ranked in the Top 20. Fritz was a winner here in 2022.

It would not be wise to rule out seven-time WTA 1000 champion Aryna Sabalenka despite her recent setbacks. The WTA No. #1 will actively seek out the elusive Indian Wells title after coming close in 2023. The 22-year-old Dane, Clara Tauson and the 17-year-old Russian teenager, Mirra Andreeva, the finalist and youngest winner of the WTA 1000 event in Dubai this year, are among the contenders as they prepare to duel in the desert.

Past WTA champions in the fray include Elena Rybakina (2023), Paula Badosa (2021), Naomi Osaka (2018), and two-time champion Victoria Azarenka (2012, 2016).

Five-time champion Novak Djokovic looks to make a return after an injury-related withdrawal from the Australian Open. The Serb will have a chance to make history if he wins a sixth title in California. He and Federer, with five titles each, are the most successful men on the ATP Tour at Indian Wells.

Jack Draper, Joao Fonseca, Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime and a resurgent Stefanos Tsitsipas are all capable of making deep runs in Indian Wells.

Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime has lifted trophies in Adelaide and Montpellier and reached the final in Dubai over the past weekend. Draper, who picked up titles at Vienna and Stuttgart last season, recently made the finals in Doha. Joao Fonseca and Denis Shapovalov, too, are among the winners in 2025. Fonseca won the Argentina Open for his maiden title and will be making his main draw debut at an ATP 1000-level event.

Shapovalov has posted a strong recovery from the knee injury that sidelined him for most of 2024. The Canadian southpaw defeated three top-10 players at the week-long ATP 500 event in Dallas earlier in February to make a re-entry in the top 50. The win in Dallas fetched Shapovalov his first title since winning the Belgrade Open in November 2024.

Stefanos Tsitsipas secured his maiden ATP 500 title at the recently concluded Dubai Tennis Championships. It is his first win since the Monte Carlo Masters in April 2024, marking his return to the ATP Top Ten. The Greek was a quarter-finalist at Indian Wells in 2021.
