Paris Masters 2026: How can Novak Djokovic qualify for ATP Finals?
Djokovic will play Paris Masters with hopes of gaining qualification
Novak Djokovic hasn’t played at the ATP Finals since lifting the trophy for a record seventh time in 2023. He qualified in both 2024 and 2025 but withdrew. This year he is chasing a place in Turin, but he has his task cut out.
“I would like to” is what Novak Djokovic said when asked if he wanted to qualify for the year-end tournament in Turin following his early exit at the Shanghai Masters.
Djookovic claimed the 102nd title of his career in Beijing earlier this October but followed that with an opening-round exit at the Shanghai Masters.

That 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Hubert Hurkacz lasted just 87 minutes. Since he was defending semi-final points from last year, the early exit cost him 390 of the 400 points he had to defend.
He then took a wildcard into the Swiss Indoors Basel, marking his first appearance there since 2011, but lost in the second round to Jan-Lennard Struff in three sets. The second-round exit earned him only 50 ranking points, “a drop in the ocean” against his deficit.
The Serbian has 2,900 points and is still 11th in the live Race to Turin. Only the top eight qualify for the November 15-22 event. Jannik Sinner’s season-ending knee injury frees up a place, which means Djokovic effectively needs to finish inside the top nine of the live race.
Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev have secured qualification, so four places are still open, with ten players chasing them.

Scenarios at Paris Masters 2026
Two players stand directly in Djokovic’s path. Alex de Minaur and Rafael Jodar are both in excellent form, and currently ahead of the Serbian. The Spaniard plays Alejandro Tabilo in his Paris opener, and a loss would end his bid.
Further up are Cobolli, Fils and Tiafoe. Below Djokovic are Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul. Jiri Lehecka and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina can only hope to qualify if they win the title, and even that might not be enough on its own.
Djokovic arrives as the 10th seed in Paris with no bye. He opens against Valentin Vacherot, who won the Basel title on Sunday. His projected route runs through Rinky Hijikata in the second round, then De Minaur or Andrey Rublev in the third.
Since the Australian is a direct rival for the last Turin spot, making it all-important contest. A quarter-final against top seed Zverev would follow, whom Djokovic beat earlier in Beijing.
The math is simple, but the margin for error is thin. Points are only added in the Race, so what matters is where Djokovic finishes relative to the rivals above him.
| Djokovic’s result | Total | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Loses in rounds 1-3 | 2,900-2,990 | Eliminated |
| Quarter-final | 3,090 | Eliminated. All five players above him already have more |
| Semi-final | 3,290 | Alive, but only if every other contender finishes below him. Overall chances are slim |
| Final | 3,540 | Alive. Needs no more than two of Fils, Tiafoe, Jodar, Fritz or Paul above him |
| Title | 3,890 | Qualifies for ATP Finals |
