In a country where cricket dominates the sporting headlines, Indian tennis players have quietly created an extraordinary legacy in doubles tennis and have collectively won over 200 tour titles. What we can say right from the pioneering Amritraj brothers in the 1970s to India’s No. 1 Rohan Bopanna, India’s doubles specialists have been right at the top of the charts.

Talking about their success spans decades with multiple Grand Slam wins, Olympic medals, and stellar Davis Cup performances that have established India as a powerhouse in doubles tennis. To make it more memorable, the achievements of these players have been particularly wonderful considering India’s limited tennis infrastructure in their early years.

Now without any further ado, let’s look at India’s top double players who have grown the sport in the country from strength to strength.

6. Anand Amritraj (12 Titles)

Anand Amritraj won 12 ATP doubles titles and came from Madras (now Chennai) as part of India’s first tennis family. His net play and strategy helped India reach two Davis Cup finals.

He often teamed up with his brother Vijay, and they made it to the 1976 Wimbledon semifinals, a big moment for Indian tennis.

5. Vijay Amritraj (13 Titles)

Vijay Amritraj has won 13 ATP titles which is one more than his brother. Amritraj’s game involved strong serves and used his understanding of smart doubles play.Amritraj has not only been a good player but also an influential person. His recent induction into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024 not only honours his run to the Wimbledon semi-finals in 1976 but also How he popularized tennis throughout Asia.

The Padma Shri winner became a well-liked sports commentator turning into the voice of tennis in India.

4. Rohan Bopanna (26 Titles)

Rohan Bopanna‘s 26 ATP titles speak of persistent effort and excellence achieved late in his career known for his thunderous serves and incisive volleys, he became the oldest first-time World No. 1 at 43 when he won the 2024 Australian Open with Matt Ebden of Australia. Also, his Indo-Pak Express collaboration with Pakistan’s Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi showed how sport transcends borders. Bopanna’s six Masters 1000 titles are a testament to his consistency at the upper levels of the game.

3. Sania Mirza ( 43 Titles)

Sania Mirza changed the game for Indian women’s tennis winning 43 WTA titles with her bold baseline play and smart doubles tactics. She climbed to World No. 1 grabbing three women’s doubles Grand Slams with Martina Hingis and three mixed doubles majors.

And Shall we go Beyond her wins? Mirza broke down social walls becoming a role model for women in Indian sports. Her two WTA Finals wins (2014, and 2015) made her one of the best tennis players ever.

2. Mahesh Bhupathi (52 Titles)

Mahesh Bhupathi boasts 52 ATP doubles titles which confirms his excellence in doubles tennis as brilliant vis-a-vis mindset and skills. His spellbinding “I-formation” with Leander Paes changed the formation game of doubles. The first Indian to win a Grand Slam (mixed doubles at the 1997 French Open).

Bhupathi later won all four Grand Slams in mixed doubles. His business smarts led him to start the International Premier Tennis League reshaping how tennis markets itself in Asia.

1. Leander Paes (54 Titles)

Leander Paes towers above the rest with 54 ATP titles, which include eight men’s doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slams. His bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics remains the only tennis medal for India. People know him for his acrobatic volleys and how he covers the court.

Paes holds the record for Davis Cup doubles wins (45). He played in seven Olympic Games (1992-2016) showing incredible staying power. As the first Asian man to enter the International Tennis Hall of Fame, Paes stands out because he can shine with many different partners.
