This is the second meeting between both players this season.

Iga Świątek, the 2022 BNP Paribas Open champion, is set to face her conqueror Linda Noskova from the season-opening Australian Open in the third round of Indian Wells Open 2024 on Sunday. The Polish star comes into the match on the heels of her victory at the WTA 1000 event in Doha, where she secured the Qatar TotalEnergies Open title for the third consecutive time. Świątek joins the ranks of Anastasia Myskina (2003, 2004) and Victoria Azarenka (2012, 2013) as the only players with multiple Doha triumphs.

Świątek also celebrated her 75th career win at a WTA 1000-level event by defeating Danielle Collins in the second round of the 2024 BNP Paribas Open. The top seed dispatched Collins in straight sets, delivering one of the “bagels” she’s become renowned for on the WTA Tour.

In the third round, Świątek is slated to compete against Linda Nosková, the World No. 50 who stunned her in three sets during their third round encounter in Melbourne—marking Świątek’s earliest departure from Melbourne Park since her second-round loss in 2019.

Nosková prevailed over Italy’s Camila Giorgi in her second round match, clinching a 6-3, 7-5 victory in 1 hour and 35 minutes during their first-ever clash. The upcoming third round match against Świątek will be their second confrontation this year and their third overall on the tour.

Iga Swiatek vs Linda Noskova  – Preview

With Elena Rybakina withdrawing due to illness, Iga Świątek has an opportunity to reclaim the title she ceded to the Kazakh player in 2023. If Świątek overcomes the challenge posed by Linda Nosková, a quarterfinal clash with either 2011 champion Caroline Wozniacki or World No. 10 Jelena Ostapenko is on the horizon. Ostapenko advanced to the semifinals at Indian Wells in 2021, defeating Świątek in the fourth round.

Nosková is enjoying her most successful year to-date, having made her main draw and quarterfinal debut at the Australian Open. Her 2023 Australian Open campaign was brief, ending in the first round of qualifying against Canada’s Katherine Sebov. Following her last-eight encounter with Dayana Yastremska, Nosková ascended 20 places to World No. 30. She achieved a career-high ranking of No. 28 in February after participating in the main draw of the WTA 500 Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open.

At the 2024 Qatar TotalEnergies Open, Nosková staged a remarkable comeback, saving a match point and recovering from a first-set defeat to overcome the seasoned Maria Sakkari in the second round of the WTA 1000 event.

Prediction

The upcoming match at Indian Wells between Linda Nosková and Iga Świątek is expected to be a gripping encounter. Nosková has shown she can challenge Świątek with her powerful serve, baseline aggression, net play and mental fortitude. However, Świątek’s experience and skill-set make her the favourite to win in three sets.

Świątek’s aggressive baseline play, topspin-heavy forehand and precise backhand are key to her game. She’s adept at dictating play and disrupting her opponent’s rhythm, crucial in high-stakes matches. Her transition from defense to offense and high-intensity footwork will likely keep Nosková on the back foot.

While Nosková’s win against Świątek at the Australian Open shows she can take a set, Świątek’s mental toughness and ability to elevate her game under pressure will be decisive. Expect Świątek to use her varied serve and forehand cross-court shots to regain control if challenged.

Despite Nosková’s potential to push Świątek, the World No. 1’s comprehensive toolkit, match intelligence and consistent depth of shot should see her through in a thrilling three-set match

Result: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
