Shapovalov has won three of his last five meetings against Jannik Sinner, but the Italian has won the most recent clash.
Alexander Zverev has advanced to the third round of the Madrid Open 2024 with a three-set win over Borna Coric. Zverev, a two-time winner in Madrid, took a shade under 90 minutes to defeat Coric 6-3, 6-2. The German dominated the proceedings without facing a breakpoint, edging ahead 4-3 in their head-to-head.
Zverev has a win-loss record of 22-4 at the ATP Masters event, taking the title in 2018 and 2021. The fifth seed has yet to exit before the fourth round in the Madrid event and will look to maintain that record when he plays Denis Shapovalov in the third round.
Shapovalov beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(3), 6-3 in 2 hours and 3 minutes to advance to the round of 32. The southpaw from Canada is in the third round for the first time since 2018. That year he reached the semifinals against Alexander Zverev before losing 4-6, 1-6 to the German.

Alexander Zverev vs Denis Shapovalov preview
The upcoming third-round match between Alexander Zverev and Denis Shapovalov will be their second face-off even in the Spanish capital. The duo played here in the 2018 semifinals where the result went in favour of Zverev. That was also Shapovalov’s best result in Madrid, and he will be hoping to better or equal the 2018 result.
The winner of today’s third-round match between Zverev and Shapovalov could go on to meet eighth seed Pole Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinals. A potential showdown with either Carlos Alcaraz or Andrey Rublev is likely should the results remain true to their seeding.
Zverev will also look to become the first man after Rafael Nadal to win the Madrid Open three times. He came close to winning in 2022 but lost to the man he will be competing with for a third title – Carlos Alcaraz.
Head-to-head records

The head-to-head rivalry between Zverev and Shapovalov goes back to 2017. While Zverev may have won their first three matches, Shapovalov turned things around in their next five encounters. The Canadian has won three of his last five matches against Zverev.
It is Zverev, however, who won their last meeting in Halle in straight sets at the grass-court event in 2023.

Prediction
Alexander Zverev can boast an 85% win rate (22-4) and two titles in Madrid. He was defeated by Alcaraz in the last two editions since lifting the 2021 trophy. While Shapovalov’s 8-5 record in Madrid could hardly be considered significant, he has defeated two clay court specialists this week.
Zverev might be too high a bar with their only previous meeting in Madrid resulting in a 6-4, 6-1 loss for Denis Shapovalov.
The German’s credentials are noteworthy on clay where he has an overall 130-51 (71.8%) win-loss record. Shapovalov is 31 – 29 (51.9%) on the surface. Zverev is 5-6 after losing the first set this season, while Shapovalov is 0-8 after losing the opening set.
Another cause for worry for the Canadian is the number of double faults so far this year – 80 to only 38 by Zverev. The German outnumbers Shapovalov in the number of aces – 230 against 117. Shapovalov can take heart in the percentage of service games won which stands at a healthy 83%.
Taking the first set will be crucial to Shapovalov’s chances if he wishes to notch up his first top-ten win of the 2024 season.
Result: Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets.
