This will be the fifth meeting between Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Sonego.

Jannik Sinner, the World No.2, will face off against his Italian counterpart Lorenzo Sonego in the second round at the Madrid Open 2024. Sinner has been in red-hot form this year winning all his final appearances. He came out victorious at the Australian Open 2024 where he fought a grueling match to outclass Danill Medvedev, followed by titles at Rotterdam and Miami. He boasts an impressive win record of 25-2 this year and sometimes looks unbeatable when he is in his element.

However, Sinner had a bitter experience in the last two editions of the Madrid Open, failing to advance beyond the fourth round. But he is a completely different player from the last edition as he has grown in confidence and stature. He is touted to be the next big thing in men’s tennis. One should not be surprised if he reaches the business end and conquers the clay courts of the Madrid Open 2024.

On the other hand, Lorenzo Sonego, the World No.52 made his ATP tour debut in 2016. He reached a career-high ranking of 21 in 2021, courtesy of a good run that season, winning the Sardegna Open singles and doubles competition. The 28-year-old Italian was involved in a few high-profile upsets, defeating top-10 ranked players a few times in his career.

In the first round, Sonego looked in good touch and defeated Richard Gasquet to set up the second-round clash against the top seed Jannik Sinner at the Madrid Open 2024.

Sinner enters the tournament in the second round and is yet to experience the playing conditions at the Madrid Open 2024. He faced a shock defeat against Stefanos Tsitsipas by 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in the semifinals at the Monte Carlo Masters. The 22-year-old is having a great season and has lost only twice, the other one being at the Indian Wells Open against Carlos Alcaraz by 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

He has a great chance to get closer to the World No.1 ranking as Novak Djokovic will be absent from Madrid Open 2024.

On the contrary, Sonego is acquainted with the playing conditions as he defeated Richard Gasquet in the first round by 6-2, 7-5. He amassed a total of 33 winners to score 62 points against Gasquet’s 20 winners and 46 points. He was particularly good at the serves as he fired nine blazing aces and no double faults.

He had an 83% win ratio on the first serves and 60% on the second. The 28-year-old converted 75% of the break points (3/4) to make his way into the second round.

Prediction

Jannik Sinner will look to bridge the gap to the world no.1 ranking in the absence of Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Open 2024. The 22-year-old tennis sensation is in exceptional form and has lost only two matches out of 25 this season. He has a winning record of 3-1 on the clay courts this season.

Sinner has grown as a consistent big-stage player and taken the tennis world by storm in the last few years. He is ultra-aggressive and has a good temperament which makes him a fierce opponent in the world of tennis.

Meanwhile, Sonego has a win record of 4-4 on clay courts this season. His best finish came at Marrakech, a ATP 250 tournament where he reached the quarterfinals before losing to Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 7-6 (5). His declining form over the years and inconsistent performances suggest that Sinner will be a serious favourite heading into the match.

However, Sonego also has some experience defeating top-ranked players which will come in handy if he decides to pull off an unthinkable heist over Sinner. Given Sinner’s exceptional current form, he should comfortably breeze past Sonego’s challenge in the second round at the Madrid Open 2024.

Result: Jannik Sinner to win straight sets.
