Top five men's singles players with most Cincinnati Open titles in Open Era

Roger Federer has dominated Cincinnati like no other man.
The Cincinnati Open is the second Masters 1000 event, serving as a lead-up to the fourth Grand Slam of the year. Cincinnati is one of the most prestigious hard-court tennis events, providing players with crucial preparation for the US Open.
The hard courts of Cincinnati are tough to adjust to, and only a handful of men have managed to dominate here. Spanish legend Rafael Nadal managed to triumph just once, underscoring the tough conditions on offer.
Here we take a look at some of the ATP players who enjoyed their time in Cincinnati and brought home the most trophies.
Men’s singles with most Cincinnati Open titles-
5. Andre Agassi – 3 (1995, 1996, 2004)
A stylistic counterpoint to Sampras, Andre Agassi also clinched three Cincinnati titles. He first broke through in 1995 by defeating two-time defending champion Michael Chang and repeated the feat against the same opponent in 1996.
After an eight-year gap, the American returned in 2004 to beat Lleyton Hewitt in an intense three-set final, capping his title run with vintage grit. His return to the top after years of struggle highlighted one of the sport’s greatest comebacks.
4. Pete Sampras – 3 (1992, 1997, 1999)
Known for his big serve and ice-cold composure, Pete Sampras’ maiden triumph came in 1992 after beating the legendary Ivan Lendl in a high-stakes final. The American returned to the winner’s circle in 1997 with a win over Thomas Muster, and added a third crown two years later by defeating Pat Rafter.
Sampras’ power-driven game perfectly suited the Cincinnati hard courts, and his performances here were a testament to his dominance in the late ’90s.
3. Novak Djokovic – 3 (2018, 2020, 2023)

For years, Cincinnati was the only ATP Masters 1000 title missing from Novak Djokovic‘s collection, having lost five finals. That changed in 2018 when he finally beat Federer to complete the coveted ‘Career Golden Masters.’
His second title came in 2020 during the pandemic, when the tournament was temporarily relocated to New York, and he defeated Milos Raonic in the final. In 2023, the Serbian outlasted Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling battle to avenge his defeat in the Wimbledon finals.
2. Mats Wilander – 4 (1983, 1984, 1986, 1988)
Swedish legend Mats Wilander won four Cincinnati titles through the 1980s. His first win came in 1983, when he defeated American legend John McEnroe at his peak. Wilander defended his title the following year with a win over compatriot Anders Jarryd.
Although he stumbled in the 1985 final against Boris Becker, he rebounded strongly to defeat Jimmy Connors in the 1986 final. His final crown came in 1988, when he overcame fellow Swede Stefan Edberg in an all-Scandinavian showdown.
1. Roger Federer – 7 (2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015)

The Swiss maestro was the first man to achieve the Cincinnati-US Open double in the same year, doing so in 2005 and 2007. With seven titles, Cincinnati stands as Federer’s most successful hard-court Masters event, showcasing his unmatched dominance and consistency on the North American summer swing.
